Who Gets the Heart shows what a difference organ donation can make and yet I'm wondering why there's such a shortage of organ donors? Is it something cultural or maybe it's like not writing a will because of some strange fear it will mean we will soon die?

It's clear how many people could be helped and yet that still doesn't seem to change how we think.

Are we afraid of what it means even though we're dead and most of us are cremated so we're just ashes at the end of the day?

What do people think?

I think people do not want to think about death and therefore just do not get round to doing anything about getting a doner card or discussing it with relatives. I have always carried a card since I was old enough to do so and my husband is well aware of my wishes.

Hi Northfields
Thinking about registering as potential organ donor is a very personal decision, some people as you say would be anxious about doing so for all sorts of reasons which are important to them. However in recent studies over 90% of the UK population were supportive of organ donation and transplantation, but in contrast only 22%(13.3 million) have put their names on the Organ Donor Register.
If you would like further information or wish to register your wishes the organ donor line number is 0845 60 60 400 or the website address www.uktransplant.org.uk.
I would also like to say that Mashers comments are very valid, telling your relatives/loved ones about your wishes as She has done is very important. so that they know in the event of your death how to support the decisions you have made.

I watched this when it was repeated late the night before last...

This cannot be for real... i think its a chris morris hijacking. The operations looked fake, and all the 'families' looked like actors.

The narrtor was chris morris putting on a voice...

I was laughing my head off each time they went to a family he would say 'In wales, things have got worse' or 'gary is feeling worse' and it never got better.

Either i am tristed and f***** up or this is a con. Im not sure. But i laughed anyway.

Safe!

It's a shame that some people here (in this thread) don't take the subject seriously. Especially when it is presented so graphically on screen.
As a recipient, 3 times over, of a donated liver I know the situations that some of these people went through.
I also respect the decisions, whatever they be, of potential donors and their families.
But unless we all take this seriously then we will end up with presumed consent, that nobody wants, even recipients I suggest.

Nigel - I agree with you, my partner is waiting for a heart transplant - without it he will die. We are scared and life is on hold and we don't know for how long. Frankly it is upsetting to see people joking about the subject. Like you i understand that organ donation is a very personal decision and I respect anyone who has taken the time to give it thought.

1)joking about things related to death lets some people not get scared of it

2) both of you have come in , said you dislike people joking about it . however , both havent stated any opinion on the programme , which is the subject of this thread . or said anything that is an opinion on this in total .
thus , you two both havent contributed either

Dear Ambalina
I 'm extremely sorry to hear about you're husband and hope he receives a transplant very soon. You are correct when you say that donation is a personal choice and I think we have to acknowledge that opting for donation will not be the right decision for everyone. However what we do try and encourage is that families talk about donation during their lifetime, so that they can make an informed decision. I think it's also worth noting that people are more likely to need a transplant than to die in the circumstances that permit organ donation.
