Ok, we all hate the verity monster and we complained on numerous websites, but I still feel 'unheard' and that things are still going on and no one cares or really does anything. What power do we really have? I wanted to see social services involved by now, the show kicked off the TV and Verity locked up somewhere. Demons shouldn't have more rights and power than others.
You can also do what myself and a number of friends/associates are doing which is write letters to the BBC, ITV and other stations to try and draw their attention to what is going on.
and make sure you draw attention to the Ofcom broadcasting code (on their website) and point out the parts that Bringing Up Baby flout when complaining to Ofcom.
I have spoken to the NSPCC this morning. I suggest that as many people as possible ring up and say they want to make a child protection referral about it. They will try and palm you off to their PR department (spoke to them to and it is worth doing so, so that they know that people want action not just a press statment saying 'we dont agree with this'.
This must become more than just a 'PR / media is bad' issue. It must be taken up as a child protection concern, both for the families in the programme and for future babies in contact with Claire Verity.
I have aslo spoken to the Nursing and Midwifery Council about her using a nurse name and uniform, despite being unregistered. Their Standards department was also very concerened and will investigate.
Lastly, I have called the Children's Safeguarding unit at the Department for Children's, Schools and Families, about the fact that 'Maternity Nurses' appear to be unregulated (if she was a childminder you could contact ofsted and have her struck off).
The more people who call to the various bodies, the harder it will be for the 'machine' to not respond.
Called GMTV today they said that they dont cover other television programmes. That surprised me as they gave so much air time to the Big Brother Dedate.
It is great to see complaints going somewhere, i cant sign the petition as its for uk residents only and i live in ireland, have complained everywhere else though. I have said before channel 4 have maybe, unknowingly, done some good??? without this programme all this wouldnt be happening, hopefully she will never work with babies, children or families again.
Contact the NSPCC to complain, Ofcom, Channel 4 (ha!) and the GMC to report the paediatrician Harvey Marcovitch, the expert advisor on the series, who seriously needs to be kept away from vulnerable children after his decision to keep quiet about child abuse.
Hi, I complained to the NSPCC too, and got the same reply. It seems as though they are taking this seriously so far. It certainly fulfills the definition of child abuse outlined on their website. I haven't had replies yet from Ofcom or Huggies. I have a baby and so have spent a lot of time reading about the subject of baby care, so I am aware that many things done in the "1950s regime" are harmful, outdated and incorrect. I get the impression from many who haven't had occasion to study this that although their instincts tell them it's wrong to leave a tiny baby in such distress, they don't realise it can cause long term harm, that the hypotheses behind it are thoroughly disproven, or that it is child abuse. They don't realise that leaving a newborn baby in a room alone is dangerous. They simply see an "expert" advocating it. Many people therefore were disturbed by this programme, but haven't complained. I hope that many more do, because I feel the implicit assumption "its your baby, so you can treat it however you like" is unacceptable. Parents have a right to up-to-date scientific information and babies have a right not to be tortured.
Has anyone asked the Police to investigate the abuse? would that be helpful? is it technically a criminal offence?
