Can someone at Channel 4 please explain what qualifications entitle Claire Verity to describe herself as an 'expert' in babycare?
I have spent several hours online and not been able to find one reference to her professional qualifications.
I read an article from a local paper from a few years back in which Claire Verity explained how she got involved in maternity nursing.
She said that her mother was a maternity nurse for many years and that she got into it through meeting clients through her mother's contacts and then being recommended by word of mouth. The article gave the impression that she had no qualifications in childcare or maternity nursing.
That does not surprise me. Listening to the utter tripe she was spouting suggests that she does not even like children, let alone know anything about their needs and care.
She apparently is paid large sums of money by wealthy, self-obsessed people who want to know how to treat their new baby as a toy - ie switch it off when its needs become "inconvenient" and start getting in the way of them enjoying their precious lives.
These people would be better off spending that money on a life sized crying, pooping, wetting baby doll that they can throw in the cupboard when they have finished playing with it. Thats really all she's teaching people to do.
I too feel strongly against these 1950s harsh methods used by this so called expert in childminding. Firstly and most importantly, this woman does not have a child and could not possibly comprehend the emotional connection a mother and child NEED to have. And I think the parents who use her help should really boost up their common sense because how could you take advice on brining up a child from someone who does not have any???? How truly bizarre. Secondly, children are not products, accessories, or things that so easily revolve around your life. Big reality check! Your priority is their well-being, the end. You do anything and everything to make them feel safe, loved, and whole. If you do not give your child these securities they will become emotionally detached from people (including the parents) and next thing you know, they are being bullied at school, or worse, become the bully. Good luck to the poor children who are starved of love and affection in this country, and the delusional people who promote it!! This woman should work for the Chinese police and shouldn't be around children at all ever again.
I've had a search, asked her myself and asked Daisy Goodwin. No reply. I had a google but all I can find are some kiss and tell type indiscretions. Nothing about her professional qualifications.
I don't know if she is qualified in Childcare As qualfied Nursery Nurse her methods goes aganist everything that is was and is currently taught in childcare. The women clearly hasn't read any child psychology books.

HI I have tried as well cant find any perhaps that is why she is so keen on abusing the Truby King training - does she know it actually exists and is totally different to what she is teaching

Hi! I was nannying for 18 years up until last year. I don't have any qualifications but currently doing an NVQ. I would never treat the children in this way and believe they need a firmness but in a nice reassuring way and not to be ignored and put out in garden with door shut etc
She is clearly totally unqualified, and I think that makes Channel 4 and Silver River (the production company) even more culpable. Did they tell the vulnerable families that the woman they were entrusting their newborns to had no qualifications at all? Well, did you Hamish?
She said on tonights show that she had been a product of this routine....gosh, what a suprise! If she is an example of how these poor children will turn out (unfeeling, mean and quite frankly rude) then I am stunned anyone would employ her. Personally i think the parents seem scared of her. she seems to have very little information to back up her views. Being a midwife myself and therefore a strong advocate for both women and their babies and most impotantly their relationship and the invaluable time spent bonding I am disgusted by this method. What is so wrong with maternal instinct?
Hi all, I cannot begin to tell you how upset and stressed I was watching this program specifically the 1950's method. What is that all about? Clearly this woman has no idea how it feels to have a baby. I mean. I am not saying that you should spoil your babies rotten with every single noise they make, but this concept of putting little babies outside for 3 hours. Is she nuts? Whats the point of having a baby. She shouldn't even be allowed on this kind of show. God knows what ideas it'll put in people's head. Go home Claire...and leave the babies to their mums!

She wound me up well and truly tonight and I don't usually have such strong opinions on any other subjects. I nearly threw something at the tv when she called the grandmother stupid for ringing at 3pm and when putting twins out she said it wasn't that cold, I said well you go lay out there then for 3 hours!
how could anyone treat a newborn baby like this and get away with it? surely if she were a young single mother, with social services on her back, she would have that baby taken away from her in a second. no way in hell i would ever be able to treat a helpless baby in this manner. it makes me really angry, and i don't think i can watch this program anymore. nellie
i think maybe she actually trained to be a vet or a farmer, (and accidently got this job with kids) who have no emotional attatchments to anything cos she certainly didnt show any sort of emotion in that program tonight ... i doubt she has kids!!
I do not understand how whose parents are letting her to do all these things to their new born???? How she (pseudo nurse) can say that 'baby ruins his parent's life'????I am worried that some many people with similar feelings are out there, watching this program and justifying their thoughts to do the way she is doing....
The woman should never be allowed anywhere near a baby or child, and I don't even give a damn if she tries to sue me for this !
Tonight she enlightened us re. her own upbringing: she said that her parents were farmers who left her at the bottom of the garden (did you mean bottom of the farm, love ?) when she was a baby where they could not hear her cry (she said with a chuckle !!)
Well all I can say is if babies left at the bottom of the garden (inaudible to anything and everything apart from the odd fox, no doubt !) ALL end up like CV as adults.....yes, you know what I am trying to say....
Ch. 4, I KNOW you are going to delete this one, but I hope a few of you read it for a laugh before Big Brother gets me again : )
I strongly agree with all the other voices of complaint. I watched the programme tonight for the first time and was appalled at the methods Verity was employing. It was distressing to watch the babies being abused and it is irresponsible and gimmicky on the part of C4 to present the method as in any way potentially viable. Without regular physical affection babies cannot develop properly either emotionally, psychologically or intellectually. I hope that in light of all the complaints, C4 takes some responsibility for affectively advocating child abuse and rectifies with an explanation at the end of the programme as to why Verity's methods are harmful to children. There's plenty of research out there proving that babies need lots of physical affection to survive and thrive.
Yep I'm with you on this one too. Ever since hearing about this woman I have wondered what on earth made her this way. Why say you don't like babies and then get a job with them. Feels like there should be a Roald Dahl book in there somewhere.
one more thing, why this program is trying to find best method, does anybody know the best method for anything? there is not any, everything you do requires common sense, but definitely routine method of 50's is not based on knowledge nor on common sense and for sure not on a mother's instinct, actually the goal of this routine method is too kill the mother's instinct and feelings such as love and patience towards own baby as soon as possible
I was at my college yesterday and we were covering body language and eye contact with babies and children and all of us agreed that the best results were from giving them all the attention and love they need. kids pick up on whether you are taking notice of them from the earliest age. Our tutor and assessor said they have come across many people in childcare who shouldn't be. A lot of my charges in my previous nanny jobs (3 of which were of around 5 years each) ran to me with problems even when parents were home.
