I was stunned to hear on the radio today that, as from Monday, all children under 12 years of age or less than 1.5m tall will be required by law to have a 'booster seat' in cars.( think those are the rules)
I think this is outrageous!!! I have three children aged 7, 8 and 9, which means I will have to buy 3 'boosters' and I have problems with this
1)Three boosters will not fit on the back seat of my little car.
2)my 9yr old will throw a fit if told to go in what he will see as a baby seat. and
3)How expensive are these things...£20 each-ish.

Apparently, if you can't fit three 'boosters on your back seat one child can go without!!!!! what a choice...."sorry darling you are not precious enough to need the extra safety" or " you better be nice or you will be put in the 'booster'"
Taxi's are exempt...Why.
This seems silly to me. I am all for safety, My children always wear a seatbelt. I think the nanny state is going too far.
What are your views?

well, mine are 8 and 5 and they use booster seats and i wouldn't have it any other way. we use them for a reason and that reason is to make kids safer, i'd rather pay the money for a new seat although my youngests was a seat that converted to a booster so it has done her all these years

well, i bought seats where the top bit comes off and becomes a booster for up to 12 years. i find my eldest who is 8 has to have the belt tight to her neck, or she just moves the shoulder bit under her arm, i don't think that's safe, with the booster seat, it makes her the right height for the shoulder part of the belt.

I did the same, bought seats where the back comes off but the third one couldn't fit on the back seat so would sit in the front. However, when my OH and I went out together with our children we had a problem... no room for the third seat or for an adult in the back... Decision made to allow the oldest child to have no 'booster' and in time they all got big enough imo to go without....

I have been told, that you are exempt from booster seats if you have seat belt adjusters fitted. The info came from a good friend of mine, but you will have to check it out.Good luck.

Well yes i can see that this may well save many childrens lives but i can understand what most parents are going through i mean you use booster seat at ages 3-4 get rid of the seat and then you find yourself in the situation of having to buy another after just getting your child out of it all very confusing for everyone and i suspect that they are going to be more than £20 now that you are required by law to have one.......
i wonder how this will go down with adults that are 4/9 or smaller?

as a child a seatbelt was good enough for me my parents were very good drivers and i have never been in a car accident. I can also see more reasons for 11-12 year olds under 130cm to be bullied for this as i can see most 11-12 year olds will see these seats as baby seats as they may well of had them when they was younger.
just another method of making money through the law i think.

It's 1.35m not 1.5m
If no room on teh back seat only two need boosters - the tallest should use a normal seat belt, preferably with an extra adjuster.

Your 9 year old is in no position to dictate to you what and what he can't do when he is in the car. You are responsible, he does what you say.

Taxis carry many different types of passenger and usually on short journeys, it's not feasible for them to cater for everyone.

Seat belts and small children don't often work. They slide up the chest and strangle your child - hence the need for them to be sat higher.

I suggest you try and find some video of what happens to children when not in the proper seat - this may change your mind.

Over time seat belt design will change to accommodate a wider range of heights, until that time I'm happy to do anything which means my daughter will have more chance of surviving a car crash.

My 7 year old is the required height not to need one...I can't see many children over the age of 8 or 9 not making the height so I doubt that many children ages 9-12 will need one anyway..

Not saying that this is a good thing but some parents with not alot of money will find this rather in covient. specially with christmas round the corner.

I think people will think this is a good thing once we all get over the shock of having to fork out lots of money in some cases.
I really do feel sorry for family's with over 3 children Frown

If they are that small they should stay on in junior school until they are ready for big school!

i don't think that will help as children will wonder why new children are vomming to the scool say month later than they did.

Im pritty sure they will figure out they had to stay behind because of there size or something and i don't think that would be fair.
Why should a child stay behind at primary school and miss out on secondairy school education because there not tall enough??

My 9 year old uses a booster seat and will continue to do so ,even though she is tall enough not to need one.We all agree she is much safer that way.
