I expect the Verity families will be left happy with the results, but what maybe good for them is not good for baby. You cannot judge the success after a few months and by the parents satisfaction. Perhaps Channel 4 could make a discussion programme for after the show. With real, genuine qualified experts in child mental health and wellbeing. They can explain the harm done, is scientific terms (for that is what is missing from bringing up baby, too many opnions and you've left out the science). Some good has to come of this.
The least you can do now is try and prevent any more harm to children by explaining Verity's method. Parents cannot make a decision without being fully informed of the risks.
I was watching dog borstal last week and you what The training methods has warning at the bottom of the screen do not use these methods use unless you have the advice of dog trainer. Does a dog have more rights than a baby. If a dog was left outside in the cold for 4 hours barking would the RSPCA be called. Surely Channel 4 should warn parents that these methods should not be used and warn about the dangers of cot death.
Rozzie - my next door neighbours have two cats each who use my garden as their toilet (not the neighbours - the cats !) Now don't get me wrong, I love cats, esp. cute little kittens (aaaahhhh) have had them all my life just choose not have one at the moment because of the dangers of infection from cat poo to my son. There is some seriously nasty stuff in cat poo !
One neighbour has no children but I know that she would be absolutley horrified if I told her to never have any eye contact or lovey dovey talk and only TEN MINUTES OF CAT STROKING PER DAY. She would probably get the RSPCA down here if she knew that I have to shoo her cats away from garden several times a day so they don't poo here : ) I guess even shoo-ing would be considered as cruel by cat lovers ?
Your right, the least channel 4 can do is provide a discussion show for afterwards with qualified, and not just one, infant mental health experts and psychologists etc to show a proper discussion on how harsh abusive methods displayed by the likes of Verity will have detrimental effects on the mental wellbeing of these babies. Other mammals are sensitive to these methods too as they have the basic social mammal brain that humans have and people start to realise this and so do something about it, but when it comes to our own young with even higher sensitivities to these treatments, we dont really recognise it as babies are a higher inconvenience to most than pets so have to be put in line as soon as. Not one thing is right about that, not one.
