quote: I've directed one of my rehearsed play-readings, but much prefer it when someone else directs
Same for me; I've written a couple of stand-ups for others, and I prefer watching my own stuff than actually directing or acting! I act in a full Am production once a year, and have done since I was about 8, and I've crewed extensively - but I'm rehearsing Boing Boing as Prompt for this November; and that's weird!

My mum (being very shy) opted to be the prompt for an amdram company one year and I swear to God she ended up speaking more than most of the actors onstage!
I really, REALLY admire the amdram scene as it's about loving what you do and having a community - as opposed to trying to get national attention like us crazy pro thesps! I have a friend who was (and is) the most fabulous singer/actor and appeared in 3 west end shows and plenty of other regional stuff before getting out of 'the biz' to get a bit more stability. He's heavily involved with his local amdram society now and it gives him exactly the same buzz as his professional work.
Actually, I do think there's an opportunity to be explored with regard to ex-professional actors. There are so many talented people out there who've had to give up due to family and financial commitments (not to mention their mental health!) and who are desperate for a creative outlet. I know people who would definitely pay to be involved in a half decent production: a 'promateur production' if you like!
