...and I'm going to sound like a right b*tch here but...

I'm really disappointed that Playing Jesus was chosen...

Apologies to all and especially to Kate Betts if she may be a member of here...but...I was really rooting for Father's Day....really rooting. The whole thing from start to finish of that play brought me close to tears at the mere mention - I don't know what it was about it or the writer, but there seemed to be this really deepseated emotion hidden within it that almost gave me goosebumps...I actually wanted to see that play.

And sadly, the one I had the least interest in, was Playing Jesus. It just seemed a little, flat, for want of a better word. I just didn't have any DESIRE to go and see it. Surely that is what theatre is about? Creating the desire in people, the longing almost to watch it that you draw them in effortlessly?

And, just out of interest, how did Ms Betts get to university professor with 2 O'Levels? Seemed a bit strange to me....

Anywho..I shall return to my corner and quietly sulk - again I'm sorry for dissing the winner and her play etc..but, if you can't be honest here...where can you!

I agree.
The actors clearly enjoyed reading "Fathers' Day"
(who included the incomparable Kenneth Cranham)

Sonia homed in on Kate Bett's play from the beginning...
yeah, we've all mentioned this.

And in the end it's Sonia's show, afterall.

Naom - I think I agree with you - I felt the writer wrote from his heart more than anyone else. Wether thingy .... well I've said enough about him - Jesus story has apparently been done before "lots" of times (but it has potential) ... but the third play I felt was like "The Royal Family" with passion, a story about real people and real lives and honest stories which will move people. Also it comes from a "village" outside of London which is quite refreshing.

press any key - where's the ANYKEY?

Naomi - sadly, I agree 100%. Can I come sulk in your corner?

BTW - KB is an Associate Lecturer, not a professor. Promoted (seemingly since her shortlisting!) from Admissions Officer in a department that deals with creative writing.

Ditto! The power of emotion can never be overlooked... except in this case.

However, I really do hope Kate Betts play is a mega hit, and that she achieves a long and happy career out of this.

As I do with all the other writers out there. There's plenty of room for us all.

I've just relived my pain.

I watched my video of episode 3...

Father's Day, so should have won. Playing Jesus was SF's fave from the start - but in this episode, it was all about SF exorcising a few of her personal demons and trying to turn the play into what she would like it to be.

While the latter part is fine for a producer – it is only okay if they are doing it for the audience, not for yourself. Unfortunately, it was the latter.

Father’s Day on the other hand had dialogue that drew me closer to the screen. It made me empathise, even though I have not lived that life – but I could understand all of the characters and relate to them.

And in quitting his job, he proved more courageous that I.

I admit, that in the first episode that I was willing to jon the band wagon that called him a Benny Hill lookalike, but as the episodes progressed, he prove himself as a writer.

He was the only one of the 10 that deserved to be there and he was the one that the actors, director and agent could truly empathise with.

Theatre is the poorer for letting him down like this. On the off chance that producers and directors look in on this forum, let the man have another chance and producer him.

(Oh, and by the way… Have a squint at one of my plays and produce them as well!) Big Grin

Hear hear to every word!

The only thing I'd add is ... we didn't see/hear enough of Iain Weatherby's play to judge it before it got torn up in his face! I think he was treated appallingly!

I so totally agree!

He quit his job too and took the whole process seriously.

I hope he has major success in the very near future.

I agree on both counts. I sensed something powerful in Manchester Shelf Stacker's play - intergenerational conflict is interesting and a universal experience.

I also agree about our old buddy Weatherby. I feel like I was deprived of the play that Ian Weatherby had on offer.

I also feel, in my heart, very tenderly, that Jay should stop pimping his plays in cyberspace, especially with that grotesque green broad smiley creepy thing. It just doesn't quite work. You don't write your synopsis and phone number on rest room walls, do you?

I agree! They take this guy out of his comfort zone, humiliate and bully him, put the weight of Islamic-West relations on his shoulders and then wonder why his play isn't working.

Let's send Caicos after Robert the Terrorist Director. Certainly that is the fate he deserves.

WHO ARE YOU AND HOW DID YOU GET MY FRIEND SWANN'S PASSWORD?!

This cannot be my dear Swann - the voice of our conscience, the dear lady that was so denigrating our own denigration of the selection process, the aura of reasonable, lets-wait-and-see patience?

Setting Caicos on poor Mr Delamere? Why, you'll be asking for Moonbird to go after him next!!!

You are absolutely right, Adman. It's just that watching Robert beat the charisma and confidence out of Weatherby' left me a little bitter

How do you get to University Associate Lecturer or equivalent quoted not "Professor" as you misqouote. I suspect if your research is as good as your observation and memory then that's why most of your writing appears here and not in the West End.
2 o Levels to the West End then?
How about a route available to us all if we really have the determination and inner fire.
A passion for the subject. Academic achievment not a pre requisite.
Mature Student.
Foundation Course at a Tech.
O level Maths Grade B or above.
Degree.
Post Grad.
M.A.
Natural Ability.
Will to win.
No ego.
Nuff Said.

Whoa up there Wotplay! You're now verging on being damn impolite to the lady - and before you do that I think you should get your facts straight, my friend.

The tv programme, her biog and all the media coverage did NOT say "she started off with 2 'O' levels' and went on to take lots of further education and then gain an MA in Creative Writing" which happens to be the truth. The spin put on by TPTT TVS and their PR was that she ONLY had 2 O levels - hence our confusion.

The 'professor' misquote was not NaomiRE's but her quoting from The Observer, who got it wrong.

Neither NaomiRE's observation nor memory is at fault, and I think it's inappropriate that you should attack either.

Neither you nor I know anything about NaomiRE's writing, and I think it's rude of you to attack it.

Naomi my love, there are lots of places you can be honest but not on this forum as the trogladytes of the production team will censor your comments if they do not like them, as the did with my take on Mr. W the other day, wiped from the face of the forum. But, I'll be back.

I DID hope that "Father's Day" would be chosen.

"Playing Jesus" seemed like a vague unstructured dream. A really strong Jesus is needed, as they repeated many times, and they didn't get one. I hope this crystalises into something with more force. I hope for everyone's sake that it takes off.

Caicos - it is my consideration at this precise moment in time that nauseous regeneration of consumed fast moving consumer material commingled with hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride and sodium chloride can, at certain chrono-junctures, be appropriate.

Pepi - I think you reflect everyone's opinion; except Sonia's!

I'm a bit late on replying to this lol, but hey - better late than never!

Wotplay - don't speak to anyone like that, especially not me. You know nothing about me, my writing or my educational background. I won't justify myself or my views any further.

Ads - thank you very much for your reply, my honour was defended admirably!
xx
