Even though every bone in me says do not respond to such prejudice and bigotry I cannot help myself. What on earth are you doing moderators to allow someone to be personally ripped to shreds by people who have no dignity and no soul? If Mrs Betts has climbed from obscurity to get where she is, that is something to be celebrated and admired. I guess my pity does not lie with someone who has achieved more than most of us every dream of achieving, and from a very difficult place. I suppose my pity lies with the sour grape hurlers who cannot offer support or intelligent comment and only offer abuse and negativity. Wotplay, do not even attempt to talk to these people. You will just feel angry and hurt. They seem to forget that they are dealing with human beings and that says an awful lot about them and nothing at all about you and your wife x

So according to nikip we must all be sycophants - we MUST agree to praise and not be permitted to give a different opinion - well sorry nikip I uphold democracy!

Nikip - you're right, you really should have kept silent, for once again you reveal your own naivety and ability to see what you want to see, not what exists.
I've just looked back through this thread and I see not one single evidence of prejudice or bigotry, merely people expressing opinions on what they saw. Can you point to that evidence?
Who are you to comment on their dignity or their soul? What omniprescience gives you that vision and what rank arrogance gives you the right to be so damn insulting?
Moonbird is right. Your post amounts to nothing more than 'I don't like what people say' - well, guess what, wake up and smell the coffee honey... in a democracy we're all allowed to have an opinion even if it's totally misplaced, misguided and wrong. Like yours!

Now come on Moonbird, you can do better than that, you know what Caicos would say don't you? well so do I, and I shall say it for him. Since first she burst upon this forum, Ms Nitpick has bust the seams in her corsets in an endeavour to perform the osculum infamia on Karen Betts and all her works, by which I mean the one which was written for her by the producers. From the very begining I made no bones over what I thought this competition was all about and events have proved me right. TPTT followed a set pattern, common to all these programmes, an objective is chosen and someone inherantly unquallified, is set the task. Over several episodes there will be tears and tantrums, finally the objective will be reached, not necessarily successfuly. This is what has happened here. I very much doubt if Kate Betts will be heared of again, she has now seved her purpose and can be disposed of. This is dreadfuly sad, as Kate came accross as a genuinely nice woman, but she is not a writer, did Mel take her on? No. Will Sonia take a call from her in a Years time? You would see the second comming first. As for Ms Nitpick the ferver with which she crusades for the third ady suggests she is either a very close relation of Karren Betts or has absolutely no taste. Caicos sends all his best wishes from Siberia, and asks if Moonbird received an e-mail from him. If there is anyone out there at this time reading this then stop right now and get to bed, it is two in the morning over there.

I also wonder why nikip is so aggressively positive? I hope it is because she is simply passionate and not because she is somehow connected to the production - that would be too sad to even think about. I suppose I have been known to passionately defend art I love, but only when provoked into it.
Btw - been reading the stage-plays forum. It's a good resource for competitions/exercises and stuff, but everyone kinda gushes over eachother a bit. As a writer it's nice to have people telling you how great you are, but I can't say I'd find it useful to making a piece better. It is interesting to read the material of other writers though.

Well done Mrs R, nitpick connected to the production team, now even my devious mind had not trotted down that particular alley. But, that is the kind of throw away suggestion which is so fequently bang on the mark, and you may be right

Do you know what Adman you are absolutely and utterly right. I knew I should have stayed silent and let you do what you do best; speak very loudly for yourself. You, Iolo, Moonbird... are much better at showing yourselves up than I could ever claim in all my naive attempts.

hi nikip, Don't know if you'll look back in, but what I wanted to ask what you meant when you said Kate Betts had achieved her dream "from a very difficult place"? Just wondering, cause I don't know much about Kate's history.
|
| |
|

Nikip - with respect, your problem seems to be that whilst you may be able to write (I don't know) you don't seem to be able to read very well; or with objectivity.
If you care to look back, I've not spoken for myself at all on this thread; nor, for what it's worth, do I think my opinions, nor anyone else's on this thread (which are as valid as yours) need any defence - Iolo's slightly OTT viewpoint excepted. You seem intent on trying to prove a point which cannot be proved; namely that I am in some way anti-Kate Betts and her play, or wish to criticise Kate or her play. I do neither and can do neither; I have seen neither. All I can do is critique what I saw on tv and say that, from everything I saw and read, the play's not for me. I use words daily in my work and am paid well for the skills I have learned in doing so; I choose my words (mostly) carefully. When I make a mistake with them, I apologise for it. But it doesn't happen often, nor has it happened on this thread.
MrsR - I think the 'difficult place' to which Nikip refers is Kate's undeniable success in study (which NaomiRE misunderstood from an erroneous Observer article) and to which Wotplay responded with the ire of a loving husband wronged. And, BTW, I've also looked in on Stageplays and believe that you're right; I'm all in favour of positivity and encouragement, but I believe it can go too far; and maybe when it does, the encouraged do not grow?
But then, it's just an opinion...

Darling Nikip - I know I'm good at showing myself up (so just leave out the compliments love - ta) Caicos's email didn't reach Iolo! Unless it was one of those "extend your member" emails I deleted (?*%!)
press any key - where's the ANYKEY?

Moonie - you and I have crossed swords a couple of times, but at least I think we've kept a grip on the truth, fact and reality; even through apologies on my part!
If the Forum disappears (as I think it now might, and indeed should) - good luck! And tell Iolo to tell Caicos (!) that he has a very... unique... perspective!

ditto Adds - it's been quite a journey hasn't it - not sure where I ended up exactly (probably further behind than when I started!) - good luck mate for when they pull the plug on the footlights

Shame others can't see the journey as the fun, not the destination!
Hand in hand, Moonbird and TheAdMan wander off into the sunset... errrmmm, that's not quite the way I saw this ending, but it's apt!

What a right on pliticaly correct little madam you are nitpick. Someone says something you do not agree with and hey presto, they must be censored, how very New Labour, which is getting a bit old hat these days admittedly. You are not one of the inner circle are you? Dear God I've just had a flash of inspiration, I know your identity, you're sherry arn't you.

You are of course entitled to your opinion Adman, and to the expression of it. I would like to genuinely thank you for choosing not to engage with us there, and reignite the discussions that soured and CoreUpted the end of this forum for so many. I agree none of us would benefit from diving into those murky waters. Goodbye and good luck your old pal, playfull

Playfull
Well, I did give you loads of clues mate!
I'm only surprised it took you so long...
No, Stageplays isn't for me - but I can see you enjoying it, and that's great! I think there's a load of useful stuff there - especially in the Gym.
I'm genuinely sorry that 'opinions' should have divided this happy band; more so that it was mostly (or at least partly) opinions expressed by Jay and I which were misquoted by just one or two individuals on this Forum. And not wanting to be misquoted or misrepresented again by the same individual is exactly why I didn't follow you.

Ouch - bit harsh, playfull. Seems to me those discussions were nearly reignited over there by Swann (so lovely of her to refer to us as sad, I must say) but was only reigned in by the moderator and Phil (of all people!). I think we all like to make our harsh/unfair comments, the only difference with stage-plays is that you're not allowed. In fact it's interesting that posters are coming back here and leaving comments that they wouldn't dare post on stage-plays.

Playfull - you don't need to PM anyone! I'm quite happy to cough!
I was maybe a tad mischievious in registering on Stageplays as CoreUpted under an assumed id. My original intent was to establish some 'non-contentious' credentials, then come out of the closet; but having decided that it's not for me (and realising that a poster on Stageplays was someone I did not want misquoting me any more, nor did I want to engage them) I've decided that I'd do a disappearing act!
No big drama, unless someone here wants to make it so (which wouldn't súrprise me). As Lewes (Boz2) has I think effectively said; the internet is an anonymous world!
But then... that's just my opinion...
PS - Playfull - I love you like a brother (you be Cain, I'll be Able) but I looked at Stageplays ages ago as part of the research for the project - so I didn't follow you there.)
And on the subject of the project, once Jay is fit again, watch this space...

Adman, I assume the "misquoter" you will not engage with is me. The fact is you did engage me. You critiqued my work and spoke to me as a human being instead of, as I saw it, playing games with people's lives and feelings by trying to be clever with words. You are clever with words and I sincerely hope you will prove that with success in your writing. I would have preferred you to have stayed with Stageplays and written and learnt with the rest of us. And I would have liked it if you had done that as yourself. I would have supported you and still would. I just can't bear to hear people put down for doing something good and worthwhile. I know that was not done by you alone. And I know that you will not see that you did. It is just, as you say, my opinion. And that opinion is that Kate didn't hurt anyone. She wrote a play and, I thought, a very good one. She did not deserve to have her educational background aired like an accusation. Her husband did not deserve to be shouted down for loving because he loves and supports her. She didn't deserve for people to criticise the content of a play they have never seen and prejudice others against seeing it. Nobody ever said you had to like the play once seen, but it should have been judged on its merits, or lack of them with coherent argument and justification, as Swann did on the other forum and Mrs R, Playfull, CK33 did here.
The whole time I feel that she has been pitched against the other TPTT writers like she is somehow responsible for them not winning or what has happened to them since. She is not. And her winning does not, and has never meant that their plays did not have value and merit also. She was talented, brave, lucky and has conducted herself with enthusiasm, grace and warmth throughout.
I really am leaving this forum now. It is long passed time to move on, and I cannot reply to you anyway as I am going on holiday and this will probably have closed by the time I return. I hope that I will not face a barrage of misogynist comments following my departure, but if I do, I do. As for the misrepresentations you constantly accuse me of; you have represented yourself, I have represented myself, others have represented theirselves. Other people will read us as they do x

Nikip
You really, really still don't get it do you? It absolutely astounds me. Yes, the misquoter I won't engage with on Stageplays IS you, and yet again you continue to prove it!
1/ I didn't engage you; you came onto this Forum and attacked me for saying no more than, from what I had read, Kate's play was not for me.
2/ I didn't, haven't and wouldn't put anyone down for writing anything.
3/ I did not criticise Kate, her play, or you for believing it was a good one.
4/ I did not air her educational background as an accusation.
5/ I did not shout her husband down for loving and supporting her.
6/ I don't know where you get the idea that Kate has been blamed for the othjer TPTT entrants not winning or 'what has happened to them since'! I don't even BEGIN to understand your statement there!
7/ You accuse me of misogyny? How on earth can you justify that?
Please, please, please return - just once more - and give sources and references for all these things you claim - or maybe apologise to me, as you should?!
