So how easily would your West End bound play or plays transfer or translate to Broadway?

Would the subject matter or dialogue be understood by an American audiance?

creative/interesting question - it makes me think "what qualities make a play universal" etc.... mine wouldn't stand a chance - it's set in the eastend of London!!!

press any key - where's the ANYKEY?

First one - UK ad agency - no chance! Almost every reference would need a rewrite.

Second one - Egypt - doddle! The pyramids are almost in universal ownership!

As over half of WE audiences are foreign tourists, I'm almost banking on the latter!

Well my submission is actually set in America, with American characters, so the story at least should work on both sides of the Atlantic.
I think I can get away with the dialogue and cultural references in the West End, but for an American audience I would probably need to run it past a real live American to act as a script doctor. Or risk ending up out on the ‘pavement’.

"Days Of Bud & Roses" ?

"Dunlop, Prince Of Tyre" ?

Hmm?

I don't see my play translating well in America;

it would probably need a very long introductory note in the programme and subtitles running along the bottom of the stage.

I don't think translating to America is a question that I'm likely to have to be concerned with.

Cancer dad story - there are strong references to past British humour which is used as part of the plot, without the knowledge the yanks wouldn't get it.

WWII POW story - very easily transferred.

Hmm... Mine's philosophical - about the advances in human technological understanding outstretching their philosophical understanding of the world... I guess that’s pretty universal. Perhaps even more to American tastes?

I had more worries that people reading it would think the synopsis sounded like a sci-fi movie pitch rather than recognise that it was more an emotional dialogue about such... I guess I'll never know if they read it as that or not - as feedback won't be given to most entrants. (Sniff) Frown

I think I'd really like to read your play Aurora - have you uploaded it anywhere? I don't know if I'll be able to write about that stuff for a while yet - but it's still something close to my heart.

Spike Milligan is at a charity fete in aid of Mental Health.

Spike stands under a large sign which reads:

"SPOT THE LOONY!"

Ernest young journalist: "Err Mr Milligan, given your own mental health problems, don't you find this sign at all offensive?"

Spike: "No. But I do object to being called "Spot".

LOL! It's always good to have someone else to blame.

"Adman made me do it!"
"It was Adman's fault!"

Yeah. It's got a good ring to it.

Arrgghhh! Forum's playing up. It won't let me edit old posts.
