Posted 17-05-05 22:43 I'm a bit confused about just what I'd be signing away. Section 7 line 7 in the conditions doesn't make sense to me; is there a missing word? I realise from FAQ that I would still own the copyright but the conditions suggest that C4 would have rights to just about everything. Can anybody shed any light on this please? by Scriptwriter
Scriptwriter! It was over a year ago since you started this forum - any parting comments? (You never know - he might still pop in? Bless him/her the little C4 webpage producer)
The writer keeps the copyright but very little else, he invariably has to sign over the rights, film, serialisation etc. which accompany the work to a third party, for example, if a London producer mounts a play of yours, he will take twnty percent of your oversees earnings for that work. Naturally the more successful writers are able to resist such attempts at larceny, but the rest of us just have to put up with it while we dream of power! When I signed the contract which led to the publication of Prime Ministers, I literaly howled in anguish, but like everyone who has ever been in that position, I would have signed away my right arm for that first step up the ladder, and don't publishers and [roducers know it.
