Was just reading some posts on another thread re 'rejection' and recalled an experience I had at the beginning of the year:- When finally going through my enormous in-tray, I found a weighty tome's-worth of REJECTION letters...but not just from writing endeavours. I'm talking rejection letters from actor's agents, voiceover agents, literary agents, regional rep theatres (re my play), producers (play again), casting directors and finally (and most humiliatingly) from admin jobs I'd applied for!!
After sitting at my desk in a state of shock for a few minutes, cradling said rejection letters and finally understanding why my intray always gave me a judder when I looked at it, I then had a blinding realisation. Out of all of those rejections, I DID get a good theatre agent this year, I DID get some voicework, I DID get my play produced (for one night only!) as the prize in a writing competition and I DID get a God-awful admin job to help fund all the time in between creative projects! There had certainly been times in the year that I'd felt overwhelmed by rejection, but something positive had come out of every single area I'd applied myself to.
So - at the risk of sounding like a puke-inducing, typical actorhippy - I guess what I'm saying is, I HAD to endure all those rejections in order to get the successes. It's ying and yang man! You can't have one without the other and each rejection brings you closer to the positive outcome you're seeking.
Pretty basic stuff, but hope that helps some of you out there!
Be strong tomorrow and remember, there's no such thing as 'my only opportunity'. It's a great big world of endless possibilities!
