I've read a few posts on the subject but I wonder if anyone official is around, or someone who knows?
Well, my submission had characters in it that used the f-word. Is swearing the same as 'obsenity' then? Would Channel 4 for instance say 'we loved the script, tone down the language and we will take it!'
Also, 2 of my characters have a religious debate. One is religious while one is an athiest. Could the opinions of the athiest (ie I dont beleive in god!) be considered blasphemy.
Hmm, well I loved my script! But if the censors are just going to bin it, it would be nice to know so I could submit another before the time runs out!
I guess since this is a West End play it should just stick to the usual topics of love and/or murder? :P
Channel 4 would not allow the username 'Production Team' in this forum unless it was being used by the genuine programme makers giving genuine answers.
I took the line that the C4 programme is being put together by ScreenStage Productions, which is a partnership with The Ambassador Theatre Group, and they want to use the tv programme to drive bookings for the play - so I kept my 'swearing' (such as it is!) to 'damn' 'stuff it' 'God' - that sort of thing - because my submissions are comedies and I'm aiming very much for a family audience.
Mum plus Dad plus 2.4 kids is a better revenue generator for the theatre than just Mum plus Dad, and for tourists / UK Holidaymakers in London I didn't want to miss on the Mum plus Dad because they couldn't take the kids!
C4 might = controversial, but to my mind West End financial success = a bit safer?
I don't think there's a lot of swearing in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Lion King, Phantom or Les Mis - musicals, I know, but goldmakers!
Not too much in any Shakespeare or The Mousetrap either!
Errrrmm ... anyone else played it a bit safe? Could be totally the wrong strategy - maybe I've been in marketing too long!!!
