It’s been a long absence from me, but I thought I would take a few minutes out to share a few bits of info for those of us that didn’t get selected.

I’ve been using a number of resources for writers to try and improve my chances of gaining that elusive professional production. And I’ve learnt a lot.

I’ve found that you really need to be pushing your professional image. Never let an agent or theatre think for one second that you are amateur about your writing. NEVER send emails if your email address is a bit quirky. Get a new one that looks professional.

Don’t be afraid of pitching big names. Many of you might already know this, but Soho Theatre & Writers Centre, the Bush, The Royal Court, The National Theatre all have reading departments. Don’t expect a rapid reply, but it is far easier to get companies like this to read your work if you approach it in a professional manner.

Also, take a leaf out of authors’ books – learn how to write a decent pitch letter (and I have to admit, I’m still learning and making lots of mistakes). http://www.writer.net gives you loads of advice and feedback on this area – do take a visit and learn loads.

I’ve also found a couple blogs from WritersBeware and a professional agent (albeit for novelist) that will tell you how to look professional and what to be wary of…

If any is interested, I can post the links later (although I think that I’ll be putting them on my blog!)

Hope this has been of interest – and keep writing.

Jay

Absolutely!

I recently sent some stuff off to the BBC. The instructions had said that submissions could be made via post, email or fax.

I not only went for good old fashioned snail mail (because let's face it, any ....body can email off half a dozen pieces of rubbish), but I plumped for Registered Mail.

Cost a fortune, but it shows I mean business.

Having a 'serious' website helps too... And websites are so easy to set up these days (My hubby set mine up for my birthday. Awwww!). It also gives you the opportunity for a 'proper' email address LOL!

Joining a writers database like doolleedotcom is also a good idea - get your name out there, and people can find you as much as you trying to get yourself out there.

Thez,

UK agents and theatres (worth anything) only accept by smail mail. When I was very green, I nerly nearly got snagged by a scammer that was email only.

Yeah, it might have cost you a few quid, but it sounds like you are heading in the right direction!

Keep it going!

Thanks!

I even hand-delivered one once. It was nice to go and have a natter with them and to see how friendly they were as opposed to those soulless, soul-destroying identikit rejection letters that seem the norm...

What was the scammer? I'd like to know (if you can talk about it), as it's always good to be forewarned...

The website address was really useful. Thanks!

Keeping posting gems like that - I've been stuck here too long, cut off from the rest of the world!

It's helpful to be given a link straight to a site 'cause I've tried search engines and the bilge they spew out sometimes...

It's just so useful to be led straight to a decent one!
