It’s been a long absence from me, but I thought I would take a few minutes out to share a few bits of info for those of us that didn’t get selected.
I’ve been using a number of resources for writers to try and improve my chances of gaining that elusive professional production. And I’ve learnt a lot.
I’ve found that you really need to be pushing your professional image. Never let an agent or theatre think for one second that you are amateur about your writing. NEVER send emails if your email address is a bit quirky. Get a new one that looks professional.
Don’t be afraid of pitching big names. Many of you might already know this, but Soho Theatre & Writers Centre, the Bush, The Royal Court, The National Theatre all have reading departments. Don’t expect a rapid reply, but it is far easier to get companies like this to read your work if you approach it in a professional manner.
Also, take a leaf out of authors’ books – learn how to write a decent pitch letter (and I have to admit, I’m still learning and making lots of mistakes).
http://www.writer.net gives you loads of advice and feedback on this area – do take a visit and learn loads.
I’ve also found a couple blogs from WritersBeware and a professional agent (albeit for novelist) that will tell you how to look professional and what to be wary of…
If any is interested, I can post the links later (although I think that I’ll be putting them on my blog!)
Hope this has been of interest – and keep writing.
