Do the sample scenes to judge your ability to write dialogue have to be from the play you are thinking of writing?

Can they be from plays you have previously written instead?

I would imagine so - it would be the best thing to judge you and your play on. But who am I to know for definate? Only the people who never read this board know for certain. Ninja

My guess would have to be that the sample you send them has to be from the play that would be finally produced if you are successful.

I can’t see how using a previous play could work. As an example, I think I’m pretty good at writing comedies… so I could enter an extract from one of those. But the synopsis I send is for a melodrama (something I have no experience of).

To me, the extract must match the synopsis. I would guess they want to see how you can tell THAT story…

Just my take

FROM THE PLAY'S THE THING PRODUCTION TEAM:

Yes, the sample scenes you submit with your entry must be from the idea you are entering to the competition, the play that would be produced if you win. So if it's a new idea you haven't written yet, we are just looking for you to write a few scenes to get a picture of how you write. Please note we are also not accepting entire scripts at this stage.

I'm confused by the Terms and Conditions for this competition - which probably proves my illiteracy, but here goes:
Some sites say the competition is for radio plays lasting 15 minutes, while others don't mention the finished length but ask for samples of 15-20 pages. At the optimum 1 minute per page this would make a very comprehensive sample of a 15-min play.
The specimen script given for reference on one site is for a stage play - a different format (which could make the 15-20pp samples even more comprehensive).
Am I being terribly stupid?
