As Channel 4 Television is celebrating its 25th anniversary we're interested in your stories about how things have changed for you, your family and/or your community over the last few years....even stretching back to the 80s if you can remember back then!
Every community in Britain has one story to tell, that of gradual decay, and the death of the 'neighbourhood'. The property market, ferociously assisted by the Right To Buy Legislation and the corporatisation of the retail sector, has created a transient, isolated population which simply does not borrow lawnmowers and recipes from their neighbours. It has decimated the number of neutral social spaces such as community centres and the humble local pub, where people from the same locality used to meet and discover their common interests and needs.
An isolated population, nore dependent on work and the media for its social life and information is by definition easier to mislead and therefore control. And therefore an easier customer base. Which is all that matters, in the end. Social values and any degree of interdependency are a dangerous threat to those corporate requirements.
