There's a horrible flaw in your line of arguement.

Religion is based on faith of what we cannot see. For the most part we cannot see it because it apparently happened thousands of years ago, before the time of video cameras.

You can debate religion for enternity as it cannot be proven that Jesus existed, and it cannot be disproven that Jesus existed.

However, hypnosis is in the here-and-now, it is subject to analysis and development, which a religion cannot. You can run studies and assess testomony of indivduals who have had treatment.

Can you appreciate the difference ?

I've asked time and time again for reasonable evidence of effectiveness of hypnosis, and been given absolutely nothing.

So, I'm perfectly within my rights to dismiss it as "mumbo jumbo" as there is absolutely no evidence supporting it.

Another way to look at this is that double placebo is mumbo jumbo because if you re-ran the whole double-placebo experiment again with a similar number of people you could get entirely different results. Nothing can be proven 100% and you would do better to rely on your natural instincts than a set of rules. If they tell you it doesn't work to the degree you demand then fine, at least you know you are relying on something naturally powerful and hence more valid.

Science and intellects often like to complicate things, common-sense will always prevail Smile

Can you give me an example of when something like this has occured in real life please ?

The placebo effect is related to the power of suggestion; so is hypnosis. Evidence suggests there is a neurological substrate of hypnosis and placebo. It seems endogenous opioid system might be the neurochemical governor of the hypnotic state

This paper is interesting for the sceptics as well as the outright beleivers: http://www.jneurosci.org/cgi/content/short/25/45/10390

I'm not sure the link will work...

Hi, Olivetti. It might well work for you, and, if it's the treatment you fancy, enquire into it. I think you will probably find there is some sort of reputable council/association that covers hypnosis, which you could find on the internet, and usually these websites have information on members in your area. The other way to do it is perhaps enquire at your local Mental Health Services (might be in your local hospital), as they usually can put their finger on this type of information, and can tell you the society you should be looking for.

Or see if your doctor can refer you to an acupuncturist through the NHS (I know some NHS Trusts do have them). Don't take this the wrong way, but it worked for my dog... Wink (I didn't want him to be on long term medication for his back problems, and we gave it a shot, not really thinking it would work). It has made a real difference and he is a lot more mobile again. Only thing is, to do it privately, I think costs a lot of money...

There have been a lot of studies of the use of hypnosis in surgery - in some hospitals it's fairly commonly used as an adjunct to conscious sedation. A recent study of patients undergoing a breast biopsy showed that those who were given hypnosis took less time in the operating theatre.
There's lots more information on this at:

I can't find a useful link but I have read more than once that placebos or simple relaxation give the same effect as "hypnotic anesthesia". I also have doubts as to whether the effects are nearly so amazing as they appear; some parts of your body are more sensitive than others.

There is so much rubbish written about hypnosis that reliable, critical information is now very hard to find on the Web. I'm one of those people who demands proof, not sensationalist TV shows; I've seen it all before and watched as purported medical miracles get defrocked.

I'd love to believe in hypnosis but for all the effort I have made to find evidence of it, I have found NOTHING. As I have promised on a couple of hypnosis forums, I will happily pay any hypnotist £500 (plus their normal fee) if they can successfully hypnotize me and demonstrate a cool hypnotic effect like catalepsy or temporary memory loss.

A good link that would suggest if done well, works very well. The Doctor seems to agree.
