I am writing to express my extreme annoyance and disappointment at the recent launch of Channel 4’s More 4 channel.
I am annoyed primarily, since right from the inception, Channel 4 have communicated that the channel would be free across all digital platforms. They communicated this in all media and advertising they produced for the channel. Now the channel has launched as subscription only, they have now set about changing this information now that the channel has launched.
This communiqué led to my purchasing of a FreeSat receiver which initially was more cost effective at £150, since the area in which I live has a poor freeview service rather than upgrading my aerial at £300!!!
Along with the BBC raft of channels which I receive, I was really looking forward to More 4 since it offered a more mature channel which isn’t being catered for by freesat. Indeed, Channel 4 were claiming it would be more accessible than BBC4…which is quite obviously not true now that it was restricted viewing.
Now, however, we are being told that this channel is not available, despite the promise that it was to be and that we must now pay Sky £15 a month for the option of viewing! I am not a subscriber to the Murdoch empire nor will I ever pay a penny more than my licence fee.
Why the change, what happened here? Surely this is false advertising?
It certainly misled me to invest in the FreeSat route instead of Terrestrial FreeView. The promise of More 4 for free was one of the few reasons I purchased the satellite dish.
I’m quite angry that broadcasters can mislead and misdirect people in this manner. Channel 4 certainly have the right to launch subscription channels, but I feel they don’t have the right to promise a free channel, and knowing people will be expecting to receive it for free and perhaps invest in a dish, snatch it from them at the last minute.
On the Digital Spy forum, people are furious at how channel 4 and sky have acted.
If this was the BBC acting in this duplicit manner, there would be an outcry. Is it right that Sky and Channel 4 can simply have carte blanche and mislead people?

Oh steady-on!!
This 'forum' is part of Ch4's interface with it's viewing public.
It is, however, interesting to see the number of people who have 'NO URL's' as part of their posting, people who post to other forums, such as Digital Spy, who say they have given-up with Ch4 Forums, and of course the number of disgruntled poster here.
Ch4 need to reassess why they have a forum and move forward positively.
