However, I DO have a medical condition, the treatment for which was years on a high dosage of steroids, which caused my weight to increase quite significantly.

Being on steroids doesn't cause weight gain.
Eating inappropriately while on steroids causes weight gain.

Why should I be forced to pay because you couldn't maintain a healthy diet?

quote:
What makes them think they are incapable of facing a normal life? People like yourself who judge others on their physical attributes.

Where have I judged anyone on physical attributes?

However, it's worth noting that weight gain is a choice, and 100% reversible. It's not the same as (for example) being born with only one ear, and getting a plastic one fitted to appear "normal".

quote:
You for one, are saying just that. "Tax the fat because they are not intelligent enough to lose weight. [quote]

show me where I posted that, or retract your nonsense comment.

Take time to read what I actually posted, and not what you think I posted.

[quote]Some people on benifits are already working a full time job, as well as raising children. When do you suggest they try and fit in this community work?

um, why is someone who can (and is) working a full time job on benefits ?

To clarify my point, I was more specifically referring to those claiming unemployment benefit. I'd have them doing community service.

quote:
And who then pays for the childcare while the parent is doing this community work?

Why does the child need to be in childcare while the parent does service? That's a really, really narrow minded comment.

There are plenty of community activities that you could bring your child along to. Furthermore there are plenty of community activities you can do from the comfort of your own home.

Let me guess, you expect community service to be picking up litter from a local park Roll Eyes

I won't argue with you there.

Eating a perfectly normal diet while on steroids can cause weight gain due to higher levels of fat deposition.

No.

A "normal" diet is entirely subjective and depends entirely on the person involved. Hence a "normal" diet for one person might be entirely inappropriate for another person.

Hence eating inappropriately while on medication causes weight gain, not the medication itself.

That first paragraph in no way connects to the 2nd one.

Let me re-phrase. Eating the exact same diet during steroid treatment as you did before steroid treatment can lead to weight gain as the steroids result in higher abdominal fat deposition. fact.

Let's remember the words of Natalie, the terminally ill anorexic woman:

In all, I have lost almost everything I had in life. My quality of life is now extremely poor, and I am dying. All for what? Being thin? What can possibly be so great about being thin to make it worth all that?

A woman I knew unfortunately had to go on a course of steroids before chemotherapy, and she was warned that her weight wouldgo up while she was on them. She wasn't told to restrict her diet - this would have been an extremely stupid course of action to follow. We know the effects that steroids have on the body, to then amplify the damage by eating inadequately is not something that is advised.

It appears Malkie has no come back to the fact that eating the exact same diet during steroid treatment as you did before steroid treatment can lead to weight gain. This could be a perfectly acceptable balanced diet.

This particular situation only partly illustrates the complexity of obesity. He also has no comeback to the 2 abstracts I cited which show that weight loss sometimes requires more than 'a little effort'. Hence he concedes that the idea of punishing people for being overweight is unworkable

Or alternatively I've been away for the weekend Roll Eyes

What I originally said still stands - the medication does not cause weight gain - not controlling your diet while on steriods causes weight gain

Simple proof - if you were on steriods and you didn't eat for a week, would you gain weight or lose weight?

Obviously you'd lose weight, so the steriods aren't to blame.

If you can't control your diet while on medication then you need to be held accountable for your choices.

sorry, but there wasn't anything in there which couldn't be over come with the smallest amount of effort.

I don't see why I should be supporting the lazy and unwilling.

The lazy and unwilling aren't the same as "fat" necessarily, so why post this on a thread about "taxing the fat"? Wink

Thats just your opinion. And frankly, it means nothing in the scientific community without evidence that weight loss can sometime be easily achieved with minimum effort.

the medication does not cause weight gain - not controlling your diet while on steriods causes weight gain
So now you want to punish people for eating a perfectly normal healthy diet?

But it clearly isn't a "perfectly normal healthy diet" if it's causing weight gain.

You can't have it both ways.

Malkie, you have such a simplistic approach to this subject. Do you actually know anything about nutrition? Do you know about any of the health/body problems that can arise from eating less of various foods? Of balances that need to be kept between proteins and carbohydrates? Or are you intentionally trying to instigate bad health amongst people you see as overweight by advocating such a stupid plan of action?

Are you suggesting that people on steroids because of cancer treatement should cut back on their diet? Try running that past your GP the next time you go visit him, I think he'll tell you this is not something to be recommended.

You'll die.

And/or suffer serious health problems before loosing the excess weight.

so the steriods aren't to blame.

Since steroids increase the amount of fat stored from any food ingested. It stands that the steroids lead to weight gain.

LOL, so you agree you'd lose weight. Thanks for agreeing with me - that was my only point.

Proves it isn't the steriods, but the choices made by the person on steriods.

Then obviously fat intake needs to be controlled.

It's not rocket science - different people need different diets.

Still nothing stopping anyone on any medication controlling their diet.

Still nothing stopping anyone losing weight.

It would seem that Malkie is so desperate to prove that people are able to lose weight when they are on medication that he totally ignores or is dismissive of the fact that patients on these drugs would be liable to put their health severely at risk. Anorexics and famine victims show that it is possible to lose weight by eating nothing, but their internal systems are totally shot and they suffer all sorts of nutritional deficiencies. People don't get put on steroid medication lightly, and are usually on it for good reason. To actually cut down on a reasonable diet for the reason of staying at the same weight when suffering severe illness sounds like some kind of statement made by somebody with rocking horses for brains! Big Grin
