Probably late 2008. So we'll have to wait about 2 years to see the channel.

Channel4 did a deal with the devil a while back, like said above hopefully once that deal has ran out it will become FTA like Film4, and not FTV like Channel4 or part of a subscription package as it is now.

Any update to this thread? I have to have Sky (no terrestrial or Freeview here), and would dearly love to downgrade to FreeSat, although would miss More4 if I did...

Sigh. Im sure I replied. I wish youd post a comment or mail people directly when you delete their responses more4. Its beyond annoying.

I cant think of a reason other than advertising, and at worst I was advertising a standard of broadcasting. Was it the links that got it removed??

Just to say I dont know what you mean exactly by freesat. A new freesat is coming very soon, mainly the combination of BBC and ITV but I believe they have also got 4 with them now, but wontbe available until October as they are signed to Sky at mo. So if you after the skyfreesat, I can only presume they already have more4 as they seemed to be signed ot them until Oct08, at which time I will move to the other freesat.

I would post a link, but this post will prolly be deleted, and Im trying to work out more4s reasoning, not for the 1st time. Its OK Ill copy and paste back in bits M4. Really do need to train your admins, or teach them to communicate better.....

There is very little info on this. I can't find anything on BBC's website. I suppose we are in such a minority that no-one cares!

As far as I can tell, only Channel 4 and Film 4 are on FreeSat from Sky. More 4 won't be Free to Air until October 2008 when Channel 4's licence with Sky expires.

What I would like to know is whether by downgrading now, I will miss out on the chance to get More 4 in October because I will be locked into Sky's version of FreeSat, or whether it will automatically be transferred to BBC/ITV's version in October - or will I need to get their smart cards (etc) and realign my dish with the Eurobird satellite?

Astra have some info on their freesat pages, but it all seems confusing and contradictory.

I do agree, I think we are in a period we just have to wait to see how it pans out. Not ever sure the companies involved directly know where they will be in a few months, and from what I read its far fro definate if freesat will get the custom base it needs to suceed. Theres no doubt that Sky are the major player here and if people continue to use their services, non sky freesat will suffer. It sounds like an excellent service though if they offer free PVR, and I hope Tivo type services many would move from FTV to freesat. Along with HD on FV but that appears its not just feasible on satelite. As said freesat should be coming anytime so its just a matter of crossing fingers and see what they offer. With more take up of the service Im sure they will increase the channels thay offer.

Would be nice to get direct feedbacl from channel4 though and what channels it plans on which service, but as said maybe this isnt possible, until like us they know how well the provider is doing.

Do let us know then if you choose to move and whats coming, I too am watching with much interest and looking to see if freesat is the future for us non subscribers. Big Grin

Hurrah - they emailed me back!!!

So here's some info for you all:

First of all, they were a little hazy about whether More4 would be on the channel list, but seemed to think it would, although they haven't had a confirmed channel list. Seems like they are cutting it fine with only a week to go until the launch (1st May, apparently).

Second, and possibly a little detrimentally, you won't be able to use your existing Sky box to receive Freesat. You have to go out and buy a new box. So it looks as if I will be stuck with Sky after all - at least until I can afford a new box (and presumably an HD TV too!!!).

Little bit more research, and it seems that the box that BBC/ITV are going to sell for use with Freesat retails at £200.

Looks like I'll definitely be sticking with Sky!!!!

Sorry More4!!

Yeh if already on Sky might come over as a bit steep. Sure will come down with time and be a bit more tempting. This doesnt include dish as well does it? if it doesnt, it will be a bit steep and a hassle to get sorted. But yes once you start to take into account its free monthly, soon catch up on sky overheads, especially have a full package including HD.

Thanks for info and comeback though, much appreciated. Big Grin

The mods removed my link and further info - maybe they have something to hide!!! There's a website called JoinFreesat that provides updated info on the whole BBC/ITV freesat thing.

The £200 only includes the box, and not the dish or installation. I think Grundig has produced a box for £50 but it doesn't include HD functionality.

Apparently it's now the 6th May, but that seems to be slipping and both John Lewis and Comet have withdrawn sales of their boxes. So it's looking more like end of June, but I wouldn't be surprised if it slips to October, when More4's Sky license runs out.

Boxes seem to be back on sale. Seems like there will be some sort of "soft" launch on May 6th. See the JoinFreesat website for more details...

Quietest launch I've ever experienced! Didn't even get a mention on BBC TV news.

I believe Freesat did get a mention on BBC News (I didn't see it but was told it was there). It is on the BBC News website though.

E4 and More4 went FTA just after 10.30am today. Channel 4 did a deal with Sky to ensure they were going to be free ready for the Freesat launch.
