As part of my A level Media course I am studying how Asian women are represented in British Asian films and if it reinforces or challenges traditional ideas of patriarchy.
I need to find out what the traditional ideas are in Asian culture.
How Asian women are represented in films e.g. weak/strong/traditional/not traditional.
If Asian women characters in film do reflect reality.
If you have any views on this subject I would like to hear your opinion, it would be very helpful.
Any replies are greatly appreciated no mater how small or relevant Also any references to films (e.g. Bend It Like Beckham, Bhaji on the beach) are helpful.
Have you tried doing a search on the Media Guardian website, you can access their archives and I've found some really interesting articles on issues of gender and representation on there before.
You could also try doing a search on imdb for non-contemporary films with Asian characters.
Oh and the only other thing I can think of is the film Bride and Prejudice, a modern interpretation of Austen's novel, which deals with issues of class, gender and culture.
