Like the title sez, what films have you seen that start of fantastic, maintain it, only to be destroyed by a rubbish ending.
My vote goes to Speilbergs AI. A film of thirds. First third is brilliant, Second is excellent, last third is utter rubbish [you know, the bit after the robot is praying to be a real boy underwater to that statue then cuts to a few hundred year where he is scavenged by some ET rejects - either they are aliens of advanced machine...don't care], eitherway it spoilt the film for me so much that i copied my original DVD and edited it out, thus the film now ends with the robot praying under the water to the statue and it fades to black. Thats the only version i watch now.
I don't care if you say "won't that disturb the narrative flow.....fook that, that last third disturbed the narrative flow for me, it was so badly presented.
What is yours. Come and have a go if you think you iz hard enough.
I didn't like the ending to Titanic either... the whole soppy bit, "I'll never let go Jack" and then when the old lady drops the necklace into the ocean.
And the ending to The Village! Who on earth would choose to live like that?!

Not aliens...advanced robots. but the look and lack of explanation makes the ending worse. I agree. I also place in The Village and the recent Fanatsic Four and I spit on your grave. on a reverse note I would say The Devil's Rejects has a good ending but is rubbish most of the way through.
I agree that the end of AI was crap, but I didn't like the beginning either. I also didn't like the bit severn eigthths of the way through it. Come to think of it, the bit five twelths was poor. Oh hell, the whole damn film was crap!
Same applies to Devils Rejects, and Spiderman 2!
[Quote from Spiderman 2 near the end] SPIDERMAN 2 - Dr. Octopus, stop what you are doing. Can't you see you have turned evil?
DR OCTOPUS (stops trying to kill Spiderman2 for a while and thinks about this) - Oh yes! Oh dear. I'll stop what I'm doing right now and drown myself in the water with my doomsday weapon. Thank you Spiderman 2!
[End quote]
Ok, what film ended with a character saying this memorable line?
I think the rubbish stupid copout ending of all time has to be the first Superman film where he flies so fast round the Earth or something that he turns back time and makes everything all right again (isn't this to make Lois not dead any more or something IIRC?). This effectively makes all the sequels redundant as you think well, why doesn't he just fix everything that way?

I always thought The Village is a highly underated film. People walk into it EXPECTING some shock twist just because it is an M Knight film, and completely miss the beauty of the film.
The reason they choose to live like that was covered very well during the course of the film. What with all the scenes of the village elders talking about the personal tragedies which occurred in their lives (Husband beaten to death, sister raped and killed etc), you really understand why they chose to reject 'modern society' and live a much simpler and more innocent exsistence. It is a concept still followed by the Mormans in the States who choose to live a life free from electricity and modern contraptions.

The Cruise/Spielberg one?
Urgh, you could see that ending coming from a mile off. Typical Hollywood happy ending. Meh.
WHAT!?!?!
It is based on a book for pete sake it, if it was hollywoods decision the humans would be able to fight them and win, firing nukes and missiles at them.

I'm sure that is not disputed, but it could have ended better even without fireing nukes. The musical had a better ending. I'm sure the book doesn't end with the main character eventually finding his ex-wifes home compleatly in tact and his son still alive and watching MTV without a scratch. Duh!
The cartoon adaptation of Lord Of The Rings anoyed me. I didn't know it was only the first half of the book, and I was quite engrosed by it, but they were half way to Doom Mountain, and it finished!
House On Haunted Hill (The new version) was actually quite a good film, untill the survivors got chased by a floating blob of ink right at the end! All they needed was Domestos! Otherwise a good movie.

Yeah the cartoon version of the lord of the rings was dreadful, thankgod they didn`t finnish it.
Don't Look Now's ending just does not make sense. Sutherland starts to gets Psychic but never gets the chance to accept or explore it. He is haunted by his daughter's death and follows the supposed 'vision' of his daughter and it ends up being clobbered by a meat-cleaver-weilding midget I mean WTF. The love story between husband and wife is lovely though

I thought the animated Lord Of The Rings was pretty good, the real shame is that they didn't have the money to finish it properly.

No no. I thought it was brilliant, and here is how I interperated it.
Sutherland was psychic all along (he had premonitions of his daughter in danger but was too late). It was revealed that a murderer was stalking the streets of Venice, and we were mislead into thinking the killer was the two old ladies. Meanwhile Sutherland thinks the little girl in the hood is in danger and has his chance to save her in semi redemption for failing to save his daughter.
When it turns out the little girl is the murderer it explains why his daughter warned he was in danger if he stayed in Venice (and was not a ploy by the old ladies to get rid of him). His desiah to redeem himself made his death inevitable if he stayed in Venice. But he mistook reality for premonition (the red hood) and premonition for reality (his wife on a barge with the ladies) So the warning came true. Like a harmonious symphony it all just fitted together perfectly. Well I think anyway.

I actually quite liked that final scene. Only when you saw the guy in the corner, did it resonate with me that earlier it was mentioned that this was what had happened to victims and it was about to happen again.

Thanks for the info Zest, I still think it's bizarre that a midget can be a murderer. I think it is a little inconclusive as it leaves the wife as a widow AND grieving mother, a bit harsh I thought

Oh yes, it is a tragic ending (which makes it a horror) but in spite of the tragedy, Venice is saved from a serial killer (I assume the police found the killer trapped in the church with Sutherland's body and promptly arrested her), and Julie Christie- though lost her husband and daughter- has found comfort in her belieaf in the spirit world. The final scene with her on the funeral barge shows her face one of brave acceptance, as opposed to the neurotic despair that she had near the beginning of the film before she met the old ladies. Heart wrenching, but conclusive. I think one of the best endings of any film ever.
As for the midgit, Well, Napolian was quite small, and he killed thousands! (Millions?) Psycopathy has no height restrictions.
