Scorsese has delivered yet another powerhouse of a film. His based on/remake of Internal Affairs is his best work since Goodfellas in my opinion, even eclipsing Casino which is hard for me to say as I'm such an admirer of Robert De Niro, but it's the truth! This is a film of the highest quality with some truly excellent performances. DiCaprio is sufficient as the lead role, however, the real power comes in the form of Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. Jack Nicholson is menacing as usual and requested his script to be rewritten more dark and sinister. Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Vera Farminga are excellent too, although Ray Winstone's accent wasn't overly convincing sometimes. This film is sharp, witty, edgy, funny...all the usual ingredients which make up a Scorsese picture. Highly recommended!

It's a great film. Without doubt the film of the year so far.

I have to agree with most of the film critics who have stated that Dicaprio stole the show. His ability to be masculine and yet convey such emotion at all times is a joy to behold. I fully expect him to get another much deserved oscar nomination.

Stunning piece of filmmaking.
Who cares if Scorsese keeps using Di Caprio, if he can get performances out of him like this I say let the two of them keep on going.
If it doesn't get an Oscar nod for Best Editing there's no justice in the world.

I saw this at the cinema last night and I must say I was disappointed. It isn't a badfilm but could have been so much better. I thought the climax lacked any suspense/excitement (remember how brilliant the last 45 minutes of Goodfellas was). There just didn't seem to be much energy in it. I don't know whether this was down to a rushed editing process but I hope Scorses revisists this and takes a little longer in the editing suite to tighten up the last half hour.

I can't wait to see if De Niro's The Good Shepherd will be as enthralling as Scorsese's latest masterpeice! Either way, Matt Damon will take home an Oscar, either for The Departed or from working with De Niro.

Really looking forward to The Good Shepherd myself RobbieJess.

I don't think Matt Damon's performance will win an Oscar for The Departed, his character was very Matt Damon like. I think Nicholson stole the film, with a surprisingly (for me) great turn from Di Caprio.

Nicholson was exceptional moda, but for me, Damon was the man. How do you rate his chances for The Good Shepherd?

He'll be his usual excellent, effortless self, I just think Matt Damon will need to come out of his comfort zone before he'll be considered for an Oscar.

Good film tailor-made for commercial cinema and with a return to home territory with a great cast with a eye for the oscars. I still prefer the original which is cooler and classier. I can't help feeling Marty has come a long way down the mountain of great movies he directed with De Niro, all originals. This is a remake and I think he's been made to play the game to get his well deserved oscar.Still, what a consolation and he clearly had fun!

Not quite all originals Technoguy. Cape Fear was a remake, and a far superior film to the original in my opinion. De Niro was a tour de force! Having his teeth disfigured and the amount of weight training he did to become Max Cady was incredible. Look at his frame in Guilty by Suspicion, a mere two films later, he's bulked up to bodybuilder status, the man is a genuis! The Departed is technically as good as anything Scorsese's ever done, even on par with Raging Bull. Sure, the acting is not even remotely close to Raging Bull, but as for camera work and shot selection, it's first class. I know what you mean though about him being ignored for all he's achieved in the past and him 'only' being recognised this year. Lucas, Spielberg and Coppola presenting the award to him shows the amount of respect he deserves and what he's accomplished in his life. We all know how good he is anyway, despite him winning towards the end of his career.

Did you copy and paste that from some crappy review.
You can swallow all the departed, dicaprio hype all you want. Time will prove my point that it is indeed a very average film.

Unfortunately the lack of question mark renders this comment useless, and means RobbieJess does not have to dignify it with a response. Them's the breaks, kiddo. But it works out pretty well for you though, because he was about to unleash a barrel of whoopass! Whoopass, no less! And a whole barrel of it. So I'd cut my losses and run before he gets here. Trust me.

Unfortunately, your inability to recognise a lowercase 'J' from a lowercase 'L' means I don't have to dignify that comeback with a response. Awesome comeback, though! Big Grin

I'm dyslexic with my main issues relating to lower case J's and L's. I do apologise. Is this a local forum for local folk ?

It's just I feel a bit like an outsider. I don't see much critique on this forum, just back slapping and a bit of tickling. Films deserve a thorough seeing too, especially rubbish films.

Nah mate, all people are welcome. Even weird outsiders! I don't think this forum has a particular identity to speak of. I see it as a place where people come to just talk about films. If you have a good look around, you will find some in-depth critique and discussion about certain films and/or filmmakers. But what makes this a better film forum than most is the lack of spammers (for the most part) and the encouragement of all cinematic tastes. Back-slapping is another term for it, sure. But we slap all backs here. Come on man, let me slap yours. Come on! Don't be shy now!

I ain't part of the tickling crowd, though. Those guys are weird.

You're quite a character Sir Juke. So tell me, what did you make of the departed. It left me a bit cold and confused as to what all the fuss was about.

Your funny sir juke Big Grin My intentions are not to reignite the fire, my comments were of a humourous and neutral disposition and I appreciate your effort to defuse the situation beforehand Wink Excellent description of The Departed by the way, very fine film.

Why thank you! I also enjoyed reading what you had to say - it's always a pleasure reading something from someone who clearly enjoys and relishes what he's talking about.

Wow. There really is a lot of back-slapping on here, huh?!

You deal out whoopass like it's going out of fashion - I'm sitting here, put in my place, crying, a broken man. By the way, I do suffer from paranoia and many other mental illnesses, and it's just as well I'm not sensitive about any of them, or my depression might take hold again.

I am so jealous of youre knowledge of Scorcese and De Niro. You must be their best fan ever, and know more about them both than anyone else - ever. You probably have Max Cady Style tatoos of their famous quotes all over your body, which proves how much of a fan you are. You probably thought Gangs of New York was ground breaking, Bringing out the dead would be considered a great film if Taxi Driver hadn't been made. You probably sit down, hanky in hand, and cream yourself over De Niro's performance in Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I'm obviously being light hearted too. I'm just trying to get a balanced debate on a film that I feel is extremely over rated. I understand lots of people enjoyed it - and more power to them, but I wan
