it was just an example though. we have to come up with films where they dont have you 'isnt life wondeful, everyone is good, i won the beauty contest' endings.

Brazil Akira Legend Of The Overfiend The Ring Chinese Ghost Story Donnie Darko Sin City When The Wind Blows
Although, just because a film has an "unhappy" ending, doesn't mean there is no sense of 'completion'. It might be that 'an' issue is resolved by the end of the film, but not the issue we thought would be.
Example - Don't Look Now - had a surprise shock twist where a main character dies (not the one we were lead to beleve was in danger) but the other main character has come to terms with their grief that they had at the beginning of the film.
Harold And Maud also has a sad ending, but in a way it resolves another issue that ran through the film.
Donnie Darko has a strange ending. By dieing, all the petty squables and divisions in his community are (we are left to assume) averted.
These are the only ones I can think of that were truly unhappy. In Brazil the corrupt government defeat the rebellion and the horrable world that was exposed to us will just keep going. The only resolution is that the main character achieved his life ambition- but only in his head! Very sinister!
In When The Wind Blows, the couple die while praying.
Sin city's multiple stories were very dark, especially the Bruce Willis story. The City is just one big nhillistic distopia.
In these cases the completion lies with us- the audience. It is up to us to realise the story was only a story, and by knowing the worst we might be able to avert the catastrophy.
Dead Man's Shoes - un-happy the whole way through to be honest, but brilliant film about guilt, brotherhood and longing for redemption that can never be acheived
Carlitos Way - You see it happen at the begining, but its still sad, "Hey remember me, Benny Blanco from the Bronx?" then that silenced pistol
"I'm the Dude! That's what you call me, you know... That or His Dudeness, Duder, El Dudarino..." - The Big Lebowski
"My life is a dark room. One big dark room." - BeetleJuice
even though you knew it was going to happen, moulin rouge was still sad
also, donnie darko, sad but yuo get the feeling that thats just the way everything was meant to be-just from that little smile. however, i didnt think greatchen was gonna die-that bits so sad, cos its so understated, no moaning and graoning and 'ill love you forever', just dead (for a while anyway!!!)

*if you leave me here ill do something evil-like burning stuff....or gluing things together.*
*You stabbed Jonathon. What were you trying to do, scratch his back from the front??!!*
