Connoseurs of unhappy endings should look to the American films of the mid seventies, when there was a strange trend for unhappy endings, even films deemed comedies could throw their audience with a suprise unhappy ending. One sticks out, I wish I could remember the title, it had Jason Robards in it, something to do with clowns. The happy ending had a shock twist with a random lunatic shooting the bride at a wedding. One of my own most hated unhappy endings is 'From Hell' Jonny Depp's narcotic-addled,pshycic detective overdoses at the end. What a waste of a great character, they could have made at least one sequel!

Agree with all barr Matchstick men. I thought the ending very good. Appropriate for the film. I didn't thing it was a non-happy ending at all.
the question in the first post is "with a totally unexpected ending" and i thought, that the film has a very unexpecting ending. but actually the unexpected turning point is not the ending, but somewhere in the latest part. howsoever i agree with you - its a good ending!
How do you know it didn't end happily, they seemed happy when they drove of the cliff together.
Well, it was only because they had no choice. I would have preferred them to have reached Mexico and been drinking margeritas etc! I get the feeling that's the outcome they would have preferred too!
I can agree with that one too. I always felt sorry for the robot that was left tending the last garden (can't remember which robot it was offhand). I know Bruce Dern told the other robot he was too banged up and would have got in the way but he would have been company (I don't think Bruce wanted to die alone to be honest).
