There is this film that i saw ages ago that was really good, but i can't think of the name and it's driving me mad. I'm pretty sure it came out in 2001 and i think it's an Irish film. It starts of with this man getting shot, but then it goes into a flashback of his life from a child up until then. He is in this gang who robs banks or robs money or something, but then everything goes wrong and people get killed and then he gets shot in the end. I know that's not a great description but i can't remebmer alot about it, all i know is that it was very good.
Reaching a bit here but Ordinary Decent Criminal (2000)? starring Kevin Spacey, or possibly the General (1998)(both films been loosely based on the same guy) are possibly what you are talking about.
I think it may be the General, it starts with the main character played brilliantly by Brendan Gleeson, Martin Cahill a notorious Irish criminal being shot and then goes on to flashback mode about his deeds.
