Hi
Sounds like a stupid question I know but can anyone name me a quality Russian film that depicts the brutality of the Eastern Front and incidently that Mark Kermode rated as one of the best war films? I'm trying to track it down to watch not just asking for the sake of it.
Ta
Mark

I would suggest "Come and See", other good films set in the East are Cross of iron, Winter War ans Stalingrad.

i have it on Region 1, its a superb film from a great film maker, its a bit slow and arty at points though and is soviet propoganda, but the acting and shocking last half hour more than make up.

Come and See is one of the greatest war films full stop - Stalingrad is too, but like Das Boot it's perspective is that of the German army under the Third Reich.

Not sure Soviet Propaganda simply describes 'Come and See' - it was made in the 1980s which was a lot different to the Stalin era and just a few years from Glasnost and Gorbachev. It's not really propaganda as the facts are true regarding what the Nazis did in Russia and the village represents the wider crimes of the invasion...

It is a propoganda film, but it is not simply that, the director was expert enough to put his own overtones into the film and to undercut the message.
