I find it hard to believe that mediocre/poor films like the third episode of LOTR, Back to the Future II & III, The Godfather Part III & Return of the Jedi are viewed as decent. I went with other - the 'Three Colours'-trilogy 'Blue', 'White' & 'Red'.

Godfather trilogy stands out from that list despite the bad 3rd part.

Other as in Pasolini's Life trilogy. Can Bunuel's threesome of Discreet Charm Of The Bourgoise, Phantom Of Liberty and The Milky Way be considered as a trilogy? If so then I'll also go for that. And Gus Van Sant's death trilogy looks promising; Gerry, Elephant and Last Days(haven't seen it yet)

However the above will be gibberish to you if you believe Star Wars, LOTR and Back To The Future are the definitive in trilogies.

I'm gonna go for Leone's 'Man with no name' trilogy

Fistfull of Dollars
A Few dollars More
The Good, the Bad and The Ugly

because those mentioned are mostly let down by their third parts, except the Back to the Future ones which are all great fun

I love the Back to The Future films but they really do not belong in there alongside The Lord Of The Rings, The Godfather and Star Wars these are all epic film trios!

No, you're wrong - the only decent one was the first film with the great Crispin Glover. The 2nd one had to stop and explain proceedings on a blackboard and embarrasingly started to intertact with the original film, while the 3rd one had lame-doubling of actors, poor allusions to Westerns and generally sucked. All opinion though! - yes Pasolini's Life-trilogy is great and I have a soft spot for Lindsay Anderson's Mick Travis films If..., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital...

Both Star Wars trilogys (actually that would be episode's 3 4 and 5 of the Star Wars saga).

LOTR trilogy

All ten Star Trek movies (not really a trilogy but still)

Dirty Harry Series (five films)

trek 2-4 works as a trilogy.
fave trilogy LOTR.
B2TF works bcause of the things mentioned as negatives.
1-50s teen comedy
2-50s style version on 2015, hellish '85, characters mixing with themselves parallel 2 events in part 1.
2-western comedy (like support your local sherieff), brill climax and wrap up of whole trilogy-great last shot.

it also works as 1 whole movie, each part dovetailing into the nxt, like LOTR.

My fave would be The Godfather trilogy, but I'm also a fan of the three colours trilogy as wiseblood pointed out.

Why does everyone diss the third movie?? I thought it was the best out of the three, mainly cause it was funnier and brought in a whole cast of additional characters.

Back to the future trilogy! Confused
They are all, in my opinion, great films, and are not too long (I get bored easily).
However, rumor has it, there may be a 4th one, as Michel J Fox has agreed to do a 4th, dispite his illness, only if his character gets to age.

The Godfather as a trilogy would be no where near the top because the third one is so poor. Therefore it can't be a good trilogy, no matter how good the other 2 are. So I'm gonna go with Indiana Jones.

when u come 2 the final scene in the final part of a trilogy and feel it ties up every plotline, character development, ends on a satisfying note and make u wanna go back it watch from the begining then u have a perfect trilogy.

Lord of the Rings! But I voted for Back to the Future 'cos I can sit down and watch them all the time, wheras with the Rings, I have to be in the same mood for 3 and a half hours.

Back to the Future all the way. They're my favourite films, not just my favourite trilogy. they're just classics. i love everything about them. i can never decide whether i like part 1 or 2 best. 1 is just such a classic, amazing, original film, but i love the way they did 2, merging it in with the original story plus it has a very young, very sweet little Elijah Wood in it! they're just amazing. i saw that on the news a while ago, but apparently it's all bull and everyone involved has confirmed that there will NEVER be a forth.
