I couldn't agree less - while 'Blade Runner' is influential (alongside lesser known SF-works like 'Liquid Sky' & 'Sans Soleil'), I feel it's nothing more than brilliant set-design and a not bad/hardly cutting edge soundtrack. The difference between Philip K Dick's source novel and the pretentious/ponderous atmosphere of Scott's film is very telling. A film that is a good subject for academic film-writing, but one that in either version is lacking. It's far from more intelligent SF, such as Resnais' 'Last Year at Marienbad' or Godard's 'Alphaville'. 'Blade Runner' is as good looking and dull as Wim Wenders' 'Until the End of the World'
The director is flawless ('Alien' was a much better film) - 'Blade Runner' is far from 'the greatest sci fi film of all time...I don't think theres a better example of scifi done well'. Risible comments, I'd take the following over 'Blade Runner':
*La Jetee
*Alphaville
*Liquid Sky
*Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
*Silent Running (couldn't have been made without 2001, but has a load more soul!)
*Dark Star
*Crash (Cronenberg)
*Metropolis (a more obvious candidate for greateness!)
*Solaris (Tarkovsky)
*The Man Who Fell to Earth
*Alien
*Last Year at Marienbad
*Existenz
*The Matrix
*2046
*A Clockwork Orange
*The Empire Strikes Back
*THX-1138
*Barbarella
*Forbidden Planet
*Night of the Living Dead (Romero's trilogy could be read as sci-fi as much as horror- I've not seen 'Land of the Dead' yet)
*It Came from Outer Space
*The Day the Earth Stood Still
*Cube
*Battle Royale
etc
I'd even take failures like 'Dune' and 'Fahrenheit 451' over 'Blade Runner'...
'2001' almost suffers from the same thing - though that does make more sense if you read Clarke's book. '2001' again is highly influential, but is it that enjoyable? - several times I've found it dull, though on certain chemicals/in the right mood it can seem great. I feel both '2001' and 'Blade Runner' are like 'Sgt Pepper' and all those cliched "greatest albums of all time" - just because they have a status doesn't make it so! & '2001' is far from Kubrick's greatest work - I think I'd put it down there amongst his worst works like the second half of 'Full Metal Jacket' or 'Eyes Wide Shite'
