This has got to be the greatest scifi film of all time. Everything about it, the cast, the charachters, the set designers, the director is flawless. I dont think theres a better example of scifi done well.

Try 2001: A space Odyssey shites on it from a merry height. Thats not to say Bladerunner is rubbish. On the contrary, its one of my favourate films....just that 2001 is better IMHO.

I never got into 2001. A lot of it went over my head, and i did try to watch it a few times to see if i could undertand it better but i couldnt. IMo Blade runner is a more accessable film and has a lot more humanity than 2001. To be honest, if i understood 2001 then that probably would be my favouirte because it looks stunnign.

What there to get? I thought the story was the least complex thing about it. You have to admit the performances and the look of it was amazing. One of the best last lines ever as well!

maybe it's because it's more of a bloke film. I just didn't understand the whole killing people for no reason and the werid people that he had to kill and the whole thing really!
Do u have to see it more than once to understand it??

I couldn't agree less - while 'Blade Runner' is influential (alongside lesser known SF-works like 'Liquid Sky' & 'Sans Soleil'), I feel it's nothing more than brilliant set-design and a not bad/hardly cutting edge soundtrack. The difference between Philip K Dick's source novel and the pretentious/ponderous atmosphere of Scott's film is very telling. A film that is a good subject for academic film-writing, but one that in either version is lacking. It's far from more intelligent SF, such as Resnais' 'Last Year at Marienbad' or Godard's 'Alphaville'. 'Blade Runner' is as good looking and dull as Wim Wenders' 'Until the End of the World'

The director is flawless ('Alien' was a much better film) - 'Blade Runner' is far from 'the greatest sci fi film of all time...I don't think theres a better example of scifi done well'. Risible comments, I'd take the following over 'Blade Runner':

*La Jetee
*Alphaville
*Liquid Sky
*Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
*Silent Running (couldn't have been made without 2001, but has a load more soul!)
*Dark Star
*Crash (Cronenberg)
*Metropolis (a more obvious candidate for greateness!)
*Solaris (Tarkovsky)
*The Man Who Fell to Earth
*Alien
*Last Year at Marienbad
*Existenz
*The Matrix
*2046
*A Clockwork Orange
*The Empire Strikes Back
*THX-1138
*Barbarella
*Forbidden Planet
*Night of the Living Dead (Romero's trilogy could be read as sci-fi as much as horror- I've not seen 'Land of the Dead' yet)
*It Came from Outer Space
*The Day the Earth Stood Still
*Cube
*Battle Royale
etc

I'd even take failures like 'Dune' and 'Fahrenheit 451' over 'Blade Runner'...

'2001' almost suffers from the same thing - though that does make more sense if you read Clarke's book. '2001' again is highly influential, but is it that enjoyable? - several times I've found it dull, though on certain chemicals/in the right mood it can seem great. I feel both '2001' and 'Blade Runner' are like 'Sgt Pepper' and all those cliched "greatest albums of all time" - just because they have a status doesn't make it so! & '2001' is far from Kubrick's greatest work - I think I'd put it down there amongst his worst works like the second half of 'Full Metal Jacket' or 'Eyes Wide Shite'

I always want Blade Runner to be more exciting than it is. I mean we have Harrison Ford at his Indiana Jones/ Han Solo peak and it does look great but at the end of the day it is a lot of style over content. It is very ponderous and the final chase scenes are the only really memorable scenes in the film. 2001 is also very dull and incoherent until a memorable last act. But neither have the narrative drive of the truly great Sci-fi films like The Incredible Shrinking Man, Invasion of The Bodysnatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still or more modern sci-fi like Alien/Aliens and Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind

I think you might want to read Wiseblood's post again, a little more clearly! Smile

I've only ever seen the original cut once...always seen the director's somehow.

With the obviousness that Deckard is a replicant himself.

BR makes the cut 4 me. very influential as the look of recent SF confirms.
kinda liked the '82 cut cos the suggestion that dekard is a skinjob makes roy's gesture more moving.
don't mind the 'happy ending' cos vangelis's theme kicks in @ the right time.

sorry, meant roy's gesture is less moving if deckard in replicant.
