Well, saying this now will make me sound unoriginal but for all those that said Raiders of the Lost Ark, I agree with you it's a great opening to a movie.

Oh yes that is my favourite opening to a Disney film ever! Having the Circle of Life playing makes it even more impressive.

One person above has mentioned it. I have seen most of the other "openings" mentioned and they do not come close in my opinion.

11-12 minutes - long barely any talking - just the sounds of man and nature - only viewers eyes and ears needed to appreciate it. Jack Elam (that wonky eyes of his) and a pesky fly - Woody Strode onto the landscape dripping with with menace and a shimmering harmonica man. The opening of Segio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In The West". Many directors tried - and even with CGI options - never bettered

One that I feel is well worthy of a mention is The Player.

Yeah, when I saw the adverts for it last night I thought about that great opening tracking shot. It's on Film4 in a few minutes if anyone's reading this.

As well as the tracking shot being the longest in film at the time, the entire sequence was unscripted, and all the dialogue was improvised.

Manhattan. Aside from being a story about human relationships, it's as much about Woody Allen's love for New York. Sets the entire tone for the film.

Of course, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't need to explain that one.

And Withnail and I. The film opens with Paul McGann's character, mid-nervous breakdown. AND you get the brilliant soundtrack from King Curtis. Fantastic.

Probably not been mentioned because it's not actually the opening seqauence of the film.

Michael Mann's Thief, with James Caan.

An almost wordless, 15 minute audacious nightime robbery set to a pulsating Tangerine Dream score.

And the opening of Heat is not too shabby either...
