Betty Blues. It opens on a sex shot that lasts about 8 min and plunges the audience in deep embarrassment. You could hardly hear people breathing.

Arlington Road - the film ain't great, but the opening credits sequence is freaky and I don't think there's a more shocking opening scene (the kid with the hand......................)

A French film called 'Ridicule' begins with an elegantly dressed nobleman being ushered into an elegant room where a sick old man is seated. He then takes out his--ahem--organ and urinates all over the helpless invalid as revenge for an insult years before. It sets the mood for the film, which is about an atmosphere of opulence and cruelty.

Superb slide guitar and mountains but the film was less spectacular.

Manhattan (Fireworks; Gershwin; the old new york skyline in brilliant black and white and then Allen struggling for the perfect opening line of his great American novel)
Citizen Kane - (The surreal death sequence with the tumbling snowglobe, the immortal last words "Rosebud" are whispered ominously and then we cut suddenly to the newsreel and the opening words of coleridges poem "In Xanadu, did Kubla Khan, a stately pleasure dome,decree..")
2001: A Space Odyssey -(Apes, eerie silent monolith intervening like God, discovery of the first weapon,Thus Spracht Zarathustra, monkey smashes bones of a carcass to the sound of timpani drums, first ape battle signalling the beginning of bloody human history, ape hurls bone up into the sky and,as it falls, transition to spinning space satellite, giant leap for mankind into the future and a majestic space ballet)
