I think it's this one:
http://www.channel4.com/film/newsfeatures/microsites/W/...t_actor/results.html

Brando came out on top, not a great surprise. I did think it was a bit of a cop out not choosing between Pacino and De Niro.

The De Niro/Pacino thing was deifinitely a cop out. As for Hopkins beating both of them. The mind boggles. I just don't get it with him. I'm not saying he's not a good actor but top 5?

Another thing, only 12 women out of 50 and one of those is Kate Winslet? These actors/peers are 'avin' a larf surely?

I think it might be interesting to know which actors were eligible to vote (ie. How many Brits, how many Americans, age ranges), and how they actually voted (whether they were asked to submit 5 names, or whether they were given a list of 50 and asked to choose 10, etc.)

I expected Hopkins in the top 20, but top 3 is slightly surprising. Depp at number two even more so. With regards to the women, it would have been nice to see some more names on the list, but IMO Kate Winslet has every right to be on there. I guess the harsh fact is female actors don't get the same attention for their abilities compared to men. Saying that, it was great to see people like Alison Steadman and Gena Rowlands getting recognised, probably the only time they'll ever appear on one of these televised lists.

I'm still reeling from Olivier being fourth and it's looks like both pacino and De Niro's crowns are slipping if their fifth - that is not right! Eek

Winslet might have a right to be there if she was lower down the list and some glaring ommissions were on. I can't believe she's better than the likes of Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, Julie Christie, Catherine Deneuve, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman etc..... the list is endless. I suspect she's there because she's of a younger generation and the producers wanted some eye candy so they picked the highest on the list of younger actresses. Helena BH is 40 this year after all so I think that's more to the point. Or am I too cynical?

I think your point about the voting system is valid J. I'd love to know how they came up with a list so damn male. Not that I'm screaming 'sexism' I just think that for a list of 50 they could surely have evened it out a bit more.

Was sad that Russell Crowe was not on the list. As you say, I wonder who chose the ones to be chosen. I think they were given a very narrow field and told no-one outside these actors is to go into the final fifty.
It was good to see Gena Rowlands there, but why not her late husband the innovative John Cassavetes? Why Montgomery Clift? Why no Gary Cooper?
I could go on.................

Depp is a great actor, who excels in a great variety of roles. If they voted him in there, its because they recognise good talent, he deserves his place.

He is a good actor, no one is saying he isn't. There is just no way in the world he should be in a Top 20 of all time nevermind #2.

But its not solely a question of quality, theres other things that are taken into account like popularity. So its not possible to say he shouldnt be there, because who are you or I to say who should be more popular than him?

My apologies. Smile

I was thinking this poll was based on quality of acting. Thats why I was shocked at him being higher than the ones I mentioned above.

He's a very good actor but compared to someone like Olivier in quality terms, the difference is huge.

No need for apologies Smile I agree with your point, although he is a great actor I would place others higher than him.

Brad Pitt higher than Gene Hackman and Steve McQueen!!! Johnny Depp 2nd greatest actor ever! I mean he's cool and diverse but when has ever done a role of any real power. Where's James Cagney, Sean Connery, Lee Marvin, Mickey Rourke, james Woods, Dana Andrews, Fredrich March, Clint Eastwood? If ever you needed any evidence that these polls aren't worth shit, this was it

It was an insult to De Niro & Pacino to bind them together like conjoined twins!

Just because they are both Italian-Americans, excellent actors who are roughly the same age & both New Yorkers it doesn't mean to say that they have to be put together. Mad

I agree, it's tough to separate them in terms of acting greatness, but surely one must have got more votes than the other? Confused

I would put Pacino slightly ahead, simply because Scarface is my favourite film, plus I feel that De Niro has done some films that are little beneath him, like Meet the Fockers. I couldn't imagine Pacino doing a film like that.

Perhaps, but of late Pacino has been doing rather more shouting than acting in his roles.

Id rather a shouty Pacino than a slapstick De Niro, any day of the week.

Pacino can shout at me any day of the week. Wink

He's always been a bit of a shouter anyway. Remember that line in 'Serpico'? His soon to be ex tells him she chose a public place to talk because he couldn't shout there, and he replies, "I can shout anywhere!"

Should this programme not have been called "America's, Britain's and Ireland's Greatest Actors", since Garbo was, as far as I know, the only actor or actress from any other country?

Personally, I would have hoped to see someone like Toshiro Mifune in it. He's probably the best known Japanese actor and turned in fantastic performances in as many classic, important and influential films as anyone who made the list. Hey, but maybe none of the people who voted have ever seen a Kurosawa film.

I agree with you completely Jimmy, but just please tell me you don't have any views on the Road To Guantanemo film shown on Ch4 recently!
