Brilliant film hampered a bit by Brandos refusal to act during the finale. Shows the true horror of the Vietnam war and just a masterclass in direction.
The only thing I hate about it (Apart from Brando) is the animal slaughter scene. I cant watch that part knowing that its real even though the symbolism which its reflecting fits in well.
Hmmm, pity both versions have such a lame ending and a pity that the application of Fellini's style and elements of 'Aguire, the Wrath of God' (to the point of mimicking its production) get in the way. There are some great parts, but some lame sections too - and it's kind of lacking soul in part, I think 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Platoon' deal with Vietnam in a much more honest way (though the best American film about Vietnam remains 'Hearts & Minds' IMO). 'Apocalypse Now!' is where it went wrong for Coppola - 'The Godfather', 'The Conversation' & 'The Godfather Part II' are much better films. Perhaps I'm just griping as 'Apocalypse Now!' is beyond a cult film, over-referenced like 'Pulp Fiction' and presented by many as the greatest war film in lots of lists. Which makes me wonder, what about 'Come and See', 'Alexander Nevksy', 'All is Quiet on the Western Front', 'Rome Open City', 'The Battle of Algiers', 'Stalingrad', 'The Red and the White', 'The Burmese Harp', and 'The Killing Fields'???
"See you on doomsday!"- Sadegh Hedayat's suicide note
The animal slaughter was hard to stomach. I know it was probably sedated and everything, but it was still strong viewing. I agree that the director tries too hard sometimes, but this film contains some of the most incredable images in the history of cinema, you just have to sit back and admire it as an amazing piece of art. It should be hung up at the Louve in Paris!
