I haven't seen 300 but I did watch The 300 Spartans on BBC2 this afternoon. 1962, stars Richard Egan. It's the film the comic book was based on that the new movie 300 was based on. Although you could argue that they're all based on the true historical event, I understand the comic book is actually based on and inspired by this 1962 movie.
Interesting story and I'm keen to watch the new movie.
Although historically I understand there were 300 Spartans, about 900 Thespians and about two thousand well trained (in combat that is) Spartan servants, pages and slaves that fought alongside their masters. Defending a dug-in position on a mountain pass, fighting a less well-trained and less well-armed force being led by incompentant Generals blinded by their superority in numbers.
Still historicaly a classic, fight to the death, last stand.
Should we let facts get in the way of a good story?
Haven't seen it yet but Gerry Butler's in it so will do as soon as i can

Didn't rate it to be honest. It looks spectacular, but has very little substance. The plot beyond a few guys fight a lot of guys is basically non exsistant, and the sub plot is hurried and artifical. Was expecting (and hoping for so much more)
If you can bypass the zeitgeist, with neo-Persia Iran headed by a ‘despot of the East’ Ahmadinejad refusing to submit to suzerains in the West, and the current standoff over 15 Royal Navy sailors illegally held by said despot, than 300 is a good movie, evoking some memories of Gladiator and Troy.
300 is a fantastic cinematic deference to Miller’s pictorial story of the battle of Thermopylae of which specifics are not known except that there were 300 Spartans and any number of Persians from 100,000 to 2,000,000, the higher the number the more heroic the Greeks look, if you get my drift.
The movie appears to enlist the same mob who appeared in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Troy. A Scotsman plays the Spartan and a Brazilian plays the Persian, don’t ask me why!
Last saw Gerard Butler, (King Leonidas) as the Phantom of the Opera; he now looks and acts in 300 like Conan the Barbarian. I prefer Rodrigo Santoro, Persian Xerxes, in the Nicole Kidman Chanel perfume ad as her paramour on the roof.
I would see this movie again at the cinema, it is a visual stunner. The score is rousing to an extent that I left the cinema seeking some evil to conquer, some ill to overcome
I got the feeling that we had two different scripts competing in one film that ended up contradicting itself. One direction the film seemed to be taking us was that the Spartans were savage brutes who we simply cannot empathise with- and perhaps representing terrorists for modern allegory; the second direction seemed desperately to try and make us empathise with the Spartans and glaze over/ignore their brutal nature.
The film opens with the former script portraying Spartan infanticide and brutal initiation rituals. The former script still seems to be evident by the time Persian messengers arrive to request tribute to Xerxes, and the Spartans kill them rather whimsically. However, the second script had already started creeping in by then so we did not empathise too much with the Persians when they meet their demise. Cases in point are implications that the king and queen of Sparta wear no jewellery or distinction from the other commoners, and hints that women were considered equal in status to men- something the Persian messenger sneers at. Now we get copious references to “liberty and freedom”, an expression used a lot in this film by the Spartans. Every time I heard it, it just grained against what they already said at the start of the film.
I don’t think it is giving too much away to tell you that there is a father/son doublet amongst the Spartan troupe, and (surprise, surprise) the son gets dispatched about half way through the film- just long enough to infuse the occasional father/son banter amidst the carnage in a supposed effort to make his death seem all the more tragic. I groaned at the cliché, but not nearly as much as I groaned when the father is constrained to say (by the lowest point in the script IMHO) “I never told him I loved him”!!!! Uggg!
I guess that made the Spartans the Americans and the Persians the terrorists. On this point I could not help notice the scene when the Spartans are being attacked by what the voice over calls “magic practicers from the east” who were obviously using gun powder bombs. What was significant was the costume was black- all over veil where you could only see their eyes. Mmm. Subliminal messages perhaps? Veil wearing women throwing bombs at the “heroes” (cough)
I could mock it more, but just one more thing. I have avoided any reference to the “homoerotic” aspects to the film. I’m sure plenty has already been said, and more will still be said, but just one point- the Spartans mockingly call the Athenians “boy lovers”, implying that they themselves were not homosexual. In fact this was one thing the Spartans were known for!
All in all a film of mixed messages, dubious morals, and uncertain issues. Extremely visual, but I’m quite sure I didn’t care if they all died. In fact I practically wanted them to. But in spite of my criticisms and mockery, I enjoyed it- if only to have something to talk about and mock. So go see it, but leave you brain at home.

I'm not trying to be facetious, but have you seriously seen this six times in the cinema since it's release ? You must have a lot of spare time on your hands, I find it tough to get to the cinema more than once a month at this stage. Personally, If I had the time, I'd rather go and see five other films and then look forward to seeing it again on DVD. You must really love this film - I hope you're not going just to see buff blokes ??
lol no iv only seen it once in the Cinema ... My friend has it on copy which i dont usually agree with but in this case i'll let it slide considerin she has lent it to me
