Sadly dead at 54. He had many more movies to make. I wasn't too keen on 'Cold Mountain' but his other films I enjoyed very much, particularly 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'.

Indeed, a good film maker. Haven't seen all of his films but I enjoyed Breaking and Entering, and The English Patient is a very good film.
