Can you think of more female directors like this: quote: Ida Lupino she is by far and away the forerunner of femle directors she actually braved alot of criticism from the media at the time because she dared to make films about subjects like rape, stalking and female fear of aggressive male attention..
Initially, my focus is on women directors who have caused some kind of controversy with their films, but other suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Hiya, Try Jane Campion or Marleen Gorris (especially the latters film A Question of Silence, caused an uproar in my film studies class!!) Dorothy Arzner is another good one, or if you're looking for controversy Leni Riefenstahl is one of the most interesting that I can think of. Hope it helps

Thanks LauraM! Very much appreciated I'll look into all of these incredibly helpful suggestions and let you know which female directors I end up using for my research.

A great director, who I know personally - as I am currently translating, from Spanish to English, her book (published by El Pais Aguilar in 1997), A Quixotic Observer which surrounds Loach's Carla’s Song, for the UK national market; is writer, actress director Icíar Bollaín. Icíar latest work - Take My Eyes, an emotional Spanish drama about domestic violence, is wonderfully presented, with all its raw emotion and social-realism Loach himself would have been proud of. There is a lot more Bollaín will achieve in the world of direction and I look forward to every second.
I also believe Elaine May to be a great director, as well as a writer and actress, whose successes include Neil Simon’s The Heartbreak Kid.

Thank you all soooooooo much! You don't know how much you've all helped/are helping me! I'm still in the process of viewing all of your suggestions and choosing three to four female directors, but when I've chosen them, can all of you who've helped + others, contribute to the new post I will set up? it would help a lot- especially as my whole project revolves around the 'audience'--- so then you'll be like my focus group! and I'll be able to use your responses! Thanks!
