I beg to differ, as I expect you thought someone might...

There's nothing over-rated about the original Star Wars trilogy. Jump started sci-fi movies as the expensive, well produced action adventures we know today. Ground breaking in their scope in the sci-fi genre. Cutting edge special effects, a great story, great action scenes, started careers of several movie stars that are huge today - Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Started the whole used space ship style of design rather than the sleek space ships of the 50's sci-fi (which the rubbish Star Wars prequels tried to go back to). Iconic. One of the original blockbusters, ie - Jaws, Star Wars the two films said to usher in the blockbuster era. Darth Vader, surely one of the most iconic movie villians ever.

You're quite right about Lord of the Rings though, just another elves and fairies, dungeons and dragons movies. When will people learn... Willow, Lord of the Rings, Troll, etc... The subject matter just doesn't make good movies.

LOST IN TRANSLATION - I've never understood the hype about that was. Asian people are small and can't speak properly - hilarious. The whole way the two people were 'thrown' together was unbelievable, as was how the romance progressed.

I found it incredibly boring, the characters unbelievable, although Scarlett johanson was good and is cute.

I agree, there is no story. They just try to use the already existing fanbase and make some easy money

Yep Titanic Not seen it tho, and I will not due to film popularity films saying its good, s*d that, the mega films that are over hyped as brilliant I just won't see because I won't be dictated to!!! Wink
So never seen all of Star Wars, not many Tom Cruise ones, not Godzilla, not brrokeback mountain nor crash or monsters Ball LOTR was the only 'best picture film' I saw. I may watch the 'Queen' tho.

It seems to me that some people on here do not understand what 'over rated' means and instead just complain about films they don't like.

The point about The Blair Witch Project is that it cost peanuts to make and was the most profitable film ever, and had a few original touches. But it was not highly rated by critics - rather the opposite in fact.

Titanic was a love story and has to be viewed that way - though I can understand that a person who wanted a historical epic would be disappointed. But again it was not highly rated by critics.

Also The Shawshank Redemption, far from being rated by critics, was ignored and did badly at the box office.

So, what actually are your candidates for over rated films?

I will give one - Chariots of Fire.

Not true. It made many 'Top Ten' lists in 1999. Overrated doesn't necessarily refer to critical reception either. The internet buzz made 'The Blair Witch Project' so successful, so that hype by fans is relevant as to wether or not the film is overrated.

Once again, Eleven Oscar wins and three further nominations is hardly indicitave of a film that was poorly received critically. It garnered many five star reviews.

Also The Shawshank Redemption, far from being rated by critics, was ignored and did badly at the box office.
quote:

Again, the critical response was actually very good. It was the commercial response that was unfavourable. And then there are the Seven Oscar nominations that followed.

A film that in my opinion has been unfairly derided over the years. I actually think that it is in parts a touching film and a testament to human will. It is very well performed. A beautiful British film.

Just shows what you know doesn't it, its THE origional Elves Dwarves and Men story and set the mark as all similar stories scince have the same guidelines, again in your wrongness Dungeons and Dragons was based on Lord of the Rings not the other way around. Do you actually realise how old Lord of the Rings is?
I also dont see how you can say Star Wars isn't over rated and LOTR is as when all is said and done, I love both series btw, they are the same story. Evil dominating and rising to power again, thwated in a small victory (The destruction of the First Death Star) (Helms Deep) only to unleash a more determined and powerfull foe (The attendence of the Emperor in star wars) (Mordor and Sauron entering the war of the ring) to the final decisive victory of good over evil (Destruction of the Death Star and the emperor) (The destruction of the One Ring)

They were just a few simple references but I defy anyone not to se the similar storylines.

Most of the Cohen brothers films and Donnie Darko. They kind of seem to be made in an attempt to be half in half out of the Hollywood circle but don't really achieve the goals of the actual film.
