I'm psyched for this movie. I saw an interview between Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving on aol's show Unscripted (here's the link ) They talk about the moral issues addressed in the movie. Great interview.
Anyong going to see this? Anyone see this and have something to say?
Think I'll avoid - the reviews have been scathing and Alan Moore removed his name from it plus it's written by the Wachowksi brothers, who have not penned anything of note in the 21st Century (those Matrix sequels...my god!!!!!) The majority of reviews I have read (Jonathan Ross was scathing about it - so the fanboy comic view will not be good) have labelled it a stinker - amazed that it gets shown in cinemas. It seems that Hollywood produced rubbish is guaranteed to get shown regardless of critical reception - The Pink Panther, V for Vendetta, Casanova, Final Destination 3, Date Movie etc. Which means I have to make a round trip of 70 something miles to watch 'The Proposition' or wait several weeks for 'Syriana' to appear. The fact that 'V for Vendetta' was re-edited/re-shot at some point is a clue to its shiteness - stick with the graphic novel. Probably makes 'From Hell' look classic...
Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) wrote an excellent piece on comic book adaptations recently - I'll look for the link later, probably on his website too.
There have been some good comic book adaptations - Sin City, Ghost World, American Splendor,Doberman, The Invisibles (well it's called The Matrix) - but most are average (Batman Begins, X-Men, Road to Perdition, From Hell) if not downright crap (League of Extraordinary Gents, V for Vendetta, Fantastic Four)
"See you on doomsday!"- Sadegh Hedayat's suicide note
Alan Moore removed his name because he didn't like other adaptions of his work like league of extradinary gentlemen and from hell. In empire it says this it also ironically V for Vendetta is the best yet
Most anticipated Movie for 2007 - American Gangster 2008 - The Dark Knight, Bond 22
Is Jonathan Ross sane did he actually watch V For Vendetta i ask because if he thought V was a "stinker" i like to know what bloody film he did see because it is possibly the best comic/graphic novel adaption ive ever seen the film was just awesome and Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman`s acting outstanding
am Susan Ivanova, Commander. Daughter of Andre and Sophie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance and the boot that is going to kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth, goddammit! I am death incarnate, and the last living thing that you are ever going to see. God sent me. Ivanova, Babylon 5
Well it's something I'll watch for free when someone I know gets it on DVD. There have been mixed and poor reviews of the film, alongside some good ones - The Telegraph liked it, that Empire liked it probably says everything you need to know! Alan Moore wants nothing to do with the film, or any other adaptation - after going through a court-case where a screenwriter adapting his work claimed Moore had ripped him off and suffered the two prior adaptations/money issues. He hasn't seen any of his films and doesn't want to - so what we're getting is a Hollywood-Wachowski idea of a British product from the 80s. Here's a typical mixed review:
Well.. that means it has no fart jokes and it's intellectual level is higher than a six year old.
That said the Matrix sequils were bad, but as this isn't something they made up (and had to pretend they had a story for all along when clearly they hadn't) it might be good.
I saw this film yesterday and this is by no means dumb. It's one of the most intelligent films out this year with an obvious social and political commentary on British and US government policies. Both Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman are fantastic in their roles and they are some truly shocking and heartfelt moments. This is the best comic made film since Sin City and that in itself is an impressive feat. 8/10 from me.

I saw 'V for Vendetta' this morning and thought it was fantastic. I loved the story although I didn't understand a lot of bits and the action is great. The ending was a bit confusing as I had spent the film being sure of who V was and then kind of being told but not really being told. SPOILER: I thought that V was Evey's father. She said he was at the ened but then said that he was her mother, her brother and everyone else. I was a bit lost...It's not going to be for everyone but it's an intelligent story full of twists and turns that I thoroughly enjoyed. See it!
7 years ago I was recruited by a secret branch of the CIA called sd-6. I was sworn to secrecy, but I couldn't keep it from my fiance, and when the head of sd-6 found out, he had him killed. That's when I learned the truth, sd-6 is not part of the CIA, I'd been working for the very enemy I thought I was fighting against. Now I'm a double agent for the real CIA where my handler is a man named Michael Vaughn. Only one other person knows the truth about what I do, another double agent inside sd-6, someone I hardly know, my father. <o>
I've seen this film twice now & it really is a great film on many different levels.
The first time V speaks I was a little worried it was going to be a film full wandering & baffling speeches, not unlike the dialogue in the last 2 matrix films. Luckily it didn't!
Hugo Weaving is excellent as V, can't think of anyone else who could have done a better job under a mask for the whole film.
Portman is ok, although her accent was a little bit in & out.
The action bits that are in the film, especially towards the end remind me of the matrix again, but in a good way & are well shot really get you rooting for V.
I wasn't expecting much of it due to reviews such as Jonathon Ross's (what film was he watching!!) In all the best film I've seen this year.
Considering how huge a fan i am of the graphic novel i was surprised and how much i liked this film. finally, theres an Alan Moore adaptation that isnt shockingly bad! i thought it was very faithful to the source material and entertaining. if only the idiot teenage chavs in the theater had shut the hell up for a second i probably woulda liked it even better.

Comic book adaptations are tricky things Alan Moore removing his name from projects dates back to Tim Burton picking his brain with regard to the Batman movie in 1989, and Moore was never credited or indeed paid, he holds a dim view of Hollywood. My fave comic book movie is American Splendour...awesome. The best comic adapatation I saw was a theatre production of Marc Hempel's Gregory at a festival last year in Belfast, everything I loved about the comic right there in front of you on stage. Wonderful
I saw this film today and i loved it. I don't know anything about the comic stuff, i just saw it as a film unconnected with anything else and i thought it was excellent!
