Together - Set in Sweden in 1975, a woman gets fed up with her abusive husband so packs the kids up and moves in with her brother. Her brother lives in a hippy commune in the suburbs. Very entertaining film with a warm heart. You'll be rooting for certain characters and hoping others get what they deserve. I enjoyed it very much. Good soundtrack too.
Lost Souls - Some Winona Ryder/Satan crud that was on late night telly. Only distinguishable by it's lack of stock Hollywood ending. Don't bother.
Austin Powers: Goldmember - Actually pretty good. I thought the second film was poor so was pleasantly surprised by this one. Michael Caine turns up as Austin's Dad in an amusing extended cameo. The 2 glasses of wine I drunk before the film started may have helped.
What To Do In Case Of Fire - German film about a bunch of people who were anarchists in early 80s Berlin. They have all grown up and gone their separate ways, becoming mothers, high-powered execs etc etc. Something happens which forces them to meet up again. The first half of the film is pretty interesting and deals with their new lives and how easily they gave up on their principles but then it turns silly and goes all Mission Impossible when the main protagonist has to retrieve the incriminating evidence from a huge police barracks. It is highly implausible and some of characters suddenly totally change. Disappointing.
Not Another Teen Movie - Should be renamed You Won't Laugh Once. Utter drivel. I still curse myself for watching it.
Girl With A Pearl Earring - Deadly dull. Scarlett Johansson wanders around doing a range of 'Startled' expressions. She is really rather overrated as an actress. Lovely tits though.
3-Iron - Brilliant Korean drama/romance. A young drifter breaks into people's homes when they aren't there. He doesn't take anything or mess the place up. On the contrary, he fixes things and cleans the places. One day one of the homes he visits isn't empty. He meets the unhappy abused wife of a business exec. They connect and he takes her along with him when he leaves. There is barely a line of dialogue in this film and certainly nothing spoken between this odd little couple (until the very end). You don't need any dialogue though. Everything is told through looks and glances. I loved it and thought it was very refreshing. If you like any of Kim Ki-Duk's earlier work then you will probably like this but if you are new to his work then this is a great place to start.
Silver City - I was really looking forward to this. A thick gubnatorial candidate fishes a dead body out of a river while filming an environmental film. His spin doctor hires a disgraced journalist to investigate whether their rivals had anything to do with it. This film was supposed to be full of intrigue and satire but I found myself sitting through one of the most tedious films I've seen in a very long time. Nobody else I've discussed it with shares my opinion so anybody reading this might see it and think it's ace. *I* still think it's totally bogus.
The Iron Ladies - Film based on a true story about a volleyball team consisting mostly of transsexuals, transvestites & homosexuals. Mon and his best mate never get picked for the volleyball team simply because they are gay. When a new coach comes in and picks them all the 'masculine' players leave the team. Mon gets all his other mates to fill the spaces on the team and they go on to take the country (Thailand) by storm. Gently amusing and entertaining. It's enjoyable but it does get a bit screechy at times.
They - I can't really remember what happened in this because I kept nodding off. Never a good sign I reckon. This girl had night terrors as a child and when her friend kills himself in front of her these terrors come back...except they are real. It stars charisma vacuum Marc Blucas which is probably why I kept falling asleep ! There was a quite scary bit in the deserted underground tunnels at night but that is about it.
