Beautiful Boxer - Based on the true story of Parinya Charoenphol, a Muaythai boxer who underwent a sex change operation to become a woman.
The story is told in flashback by the now fully female Parinya. I thought it was a pretty good film. There were some melodramatic moments but all in all it was pretty enjoyable. A lot of the fights were done for real and looked knackering. The lead actor was in his first role and I thought he was very impressive.
The Aristocrats - Loads of comedians tell the same vile joke in their own styles. The joke isn't really funny at all, the humour is all in the telling. Some of the people will be familiar to us Brits but a lot will not be but I don't think that will hurt your enjoyment. The joke contains sex, violence and all manner of really ott awfulness but the only thing that really bothered me was the woman who told the racist jokes. It made me feel very uncomfortable.
It outstays its welcome slightly at 89 mins.
Dr Dolittle 2 - I honestly cannot remember what happens in this film. I can only remember being annoyed at wasting my time watching it.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding - Awful, awful, awful. I do not understand why this was a huge hit. It was dull, boring, lazy and embarrassing. The best part was when the credits came up and I knew the mind-numbing tedium was over.
The Machinist - A guy gets thinner and more paranoid over the course of a year. Strange people pop up and weird things happen.
After sitting through it the end was a massive disappointment. A load of something about nothing.
Red Eye - Mildy entertaining thriller. Cillian Murphy makes a decent baddie up until the last 15 mins. It's a pretty claustrophobic film but not really scary. The last 20 minutes just made me laugh.
The Skeleton Key - Predictable thriller. Very watchable but I kept waiting for something to happen. Not helped by the annoying Kate Hudson.
Happy Together Yiu-Fai (Excellent Tony Leung) and Po-Wing (Leslie Cheung) are from Hong Kong but they are in Argentina on a holiday slash 'fresh start'. It all goes tits up and Yiu-Fai has to work as a doorman at a tango bar to make money to get back home. Po-Wing's reappearence spells trouble.
It can be quite confusing as it moves back and forwards in time and another character gets added into the mix. The plot isn't really the important part, the troubled relationship between Yiu-Fai and Po-Wing is what matters.
I enjoyed it's mix of love, sadness and hope.
War Of The Worlds - Tom Cruise does deadbeat Dad. Poor Tom, it's the end of the world, aliens have invaded and he is saddled with two of the worst kids known to man. Hopefully Dakota Fanning will soon enter her acne/rehab years and stay the hell off my screen. Urgh !
Some of the action set pieces are impressive as you would expect from Spielberg but the repeated theme of Cruise being this awful part-time dad is unecessary and annoying. The ending is also implausible and pissed me right off.
Blind Horizon - Some nonsense about Val Kilmer being thrown off a cliff and getting amnesia. The problem with this is that he is involved in a plot to assassinate the President. Is he one of the good guys or bad guys. Pfft, who cares ?
