The Piano Teacher

Second time I've watched it and I still don't get it; it's a mind-boggling plot about a prude music professor who plays sexual games with one of her students - only trouble is she's not responsive and it's quite clear after an hour of watching that's she's a sarnie short of a picnic! You can't feel any empathy for the woman because there's too much guesswork goin' on - Was she abused as a child, is she just sexually frustrated has her overbearing mother pushed her a little too far? YOU NEVER GET TO KNOW!! You end up feeling sorry for the student and beg him to run in the other direction, the ending is daft and it's just really, really strange. However the acting is very intense and just goes to show you don't have to cook a nice little white bunny in a pot to be way over the cuckoo's nest! 6/10

I don't think you are supposed to know. Maybe nothing ever happened to her. She is just extremely repressed. I like it and as an added bonus Benoit Magimel (Walter) is very cute.

Big Fish - 8/10
I'd heard bad things about this but I found it very touching. Like an adult fairytale. Great cast, working well.

The Weather Man - 8/10
Be warned, don't watch this if rich people's angst irritates you. Solid performances, decent enough story. Michael Caine's accent seemed to improve as the film went on, which was interesting all on its own. I probably would have given it a lower rating but it drew some tears out of me. Actually come to think of it I cried at the end of Big Fish too. Maybe I'm just really, really depressed and haven't realised it yet. Or maybe I'm a wuss. A big wuss.

I watched The Squid and The Whale directed by Noah Baumbach based on his childhood experiences living in Brooklyn with warring parents.
Owen Kline, the progeny of Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline makes an amazing debut as Frank, the younger of two siblings in the film. The parents are played by Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels( IMO his best role so far). Daniels is a failing writer slowly getting overshadowed by his wife. This leads to jealousy and eventually a split. But the crux of the film is the effect of this on the two boys, Frank and Walt(played by Jesse Iesenberg). This film really affected me but several people i watched it with were indifferent. It's a definately love or loathe movie.

Check out the great soundtrack

The New World - 6/10
I think this is one of those films which has to be seen on the big screen to appreciate it. I've tried watching this 4 times in the past week, and 3 of those times I fell asleep. It was late, so I'm not sure if I can blame the film totally. The 4th time I didn't take any chances, so started watching it halfway through. Make sure you watch this on a big screen, preferably with some mind-altering substances at your disposal.

Kings and Queen - 8/10
I was recently put onto this by someone and it didn't disappoint. Maybe not for everyone, but Emmanuelle Devos is top class. Try to watch it if you can.

Man on Fire. It was alright. It was shaping up to be real good but it didn't happen. Too long as well.

The problem I had with Man On Fire was it's total and utter shitness. I have shunned Tony Scott forever.

^^Superb film!

The Corpse Bride
Wonderful animation, and really enjoyed the film, great characters. However, whilst the animation was better than The Nightmare Before Christmas, I thought the story was slightly poorer than it. Loved it though.

King Kong, not bad for a remake, original is still the best though. Adrien Brody spoiled it for me because he is not a handsome leading man - he looks like a cross between Alistair McGowan and a Tim Burton animated character -
and a film like King Kong needs a handsome leading man,it's not art after all,it's entertainment.I thought its representation of the black islanders was a bit dodgy and the
whole 'heart of darkness' thing - it could easilly be accused of racism but that might be a deliberate attempt by the director to defy political correctness.

American Dreamz - Quite an enjoyable film. Hugh Grant is good and not annoying for once. A good idea for a film but I think it could have been longer. Had a bit of a shock as I quite fancy Willem Dafoe but in this he's grey and balding, and looks exactly like Mr Barns in the Simpsons!

Mission Impossible - Preparing for MI3 Smile

A History of Violence - I wasn't impressed by it. There was nothing wrong with it, its just that nothing much happened.

The Family Stone - I know its a bit out of season but it was enjoyable enough. I really liked the cast.

American Dreamz - Had funny moments but I didn't like it, I need to learn to steer clear of Hugh Grant films.

The Goonies - Its a great wee feel good film

School of Rock - Hadn't seen it in ages, still funny, but not as funny as the first few times.

Alien Autopsy - I love Ant & Dec which was my main reason for going to see this. It wasn't a bad film, funnier and better than I imagined but there was nothing spectacular about it.
