R-Point - A bunch of Korean soldiers on the verge of ending their tours of duty in Vietnam are sent to an island to search for some missing soldiers. It all goes spooky and their chances of returning to Korea get slimmer every day.
It looked interesting but it's very confusing. Because the soldiers are constantly wearing helmets it was very difficult to tell them apart. Consequently when something happens you don't know who the hell it has happened to. That makes it a bit harder to give a crap.
It's quite atmospheric and there is a spooky vibe but it didn't really do anything for me.
The Island - I wanted to see this to see how bad it must be. Some of the reviews I read were dreadful. I was really rather surprised at the end because this film is not bad at all.
If you are looking for an intelligent debate into the pros and cons of cloning then this obviously isn't the film to watch. I found it very entertaining. There are some excellent action set pieces and Ewan McGregor is very effective as the bewildered hero.
There are some cheesey moments but don't let that put you off. It's no masterpiece but it didn't deserve the slagging it got from the press.
Strangers On A Train - A chance encounter on a train between two strangers ends in murder.
I did like this film but I thought the hero was a bit of a wet blanket. The villain was cool though, very creepy and quite plausible.
Ideally it would have been a bit longer.
Final Destination 2 - Lots of grizzly, inventive deaths but lacks the tension of the first film. Watchable.
Capturing The Friedmans - Compelling and disturbing documentary of a family in meltdown. This film follows the story of Jesse and Arnold Friedman who have been arrested on multiple charges of molesting young boys.
One of the most disturbing things to me is that Jesse seemed to be convicted on hearsay alone. There was no physical evidence and only the witness statements of some confused kids. Will we ever know if Jesse was really involved ?
I found the eldest son's total hatred and hostility towards his mother a bit weird. But then again I don't think she was ever going to win any mother of the year awards.
Intolerable Cruelty - A perfect title for this awful film. I guess it was supposed to be funny. They got it wrong on all levels. Intolerable b0llocks.
Life As A House - A man (Kevin Kline) loses his job and gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. He decides that he should build the house he always wanted to but put off doing. He also makes his sullen teenage son (Hayden Christensen) live with him so he can get to know him.
Not the kind of thing I would usually watch but I found myself really getting into it. Christensen does moody teen very well and Kline is good as always. I did feel a bit weepy at the end. I thought the Mum was a bit of a cow though.
Bullet In The Head - 3 friends get into trouble in Hong Kong and go to Vietnam to make their fortunes as war profiteers. Unsurprisingly it all goes tits up.
Loads of people have raved to me about this John Woo film - it's his best, it's a classic blah blah. I thought it was ok but that's it. I thought some of it was ludicrous. I think I had a dodgy copy as well because the sound was rubbish.
Four Brothers - A woman gets gunned down in a mini-mart robbery. At first it seems like a random act but then it becomes clear she was set up. Her four adopted sons return to avenge her death.
Some of this is pretty cringeworthy. The macho gangster posturing by Marky Mark is hilarious. It improves though and there is a decent car chase and lots of shooting. Chiwetel Ejiofor is suitably menacing as the unhinged Mr Big. He was one of the best things about it actually. I liked Garrett Hedlund as the youngest bro as well. I could have done without the shrieking latina girlfriend/sterotype.
Show Me Love - A film about two teenage girls in small town Sweden. They couldn't be more different. Elin is with the in-crowd and very pretty. Agnes is a nobody with no friends and has a huge crush on Elin.
A very accurate portrayal of teenage life in a nowhere town. The boredom of both the girls reminds me a bit of how I was at that age. I liked this film, I thought it was very touching.
