About Schmitd 9/10Warren Schmidt has arrived at several of life's crossroads all at the same time. To begin with, he is retiring from a lifetime of service as an actuary for Woodmen of the World Insurance Company, and he feels utterly adrift. Furthermore, his only daughter Jeannie is about to marry a boob. And his wife Helen dies suddenly after 42 years of marriage. With no job, no wife, and no family, Warren is desperate to find something meaningful in his thoroughly unimpressive life. He sets out on a journey of self-discovery, exploring his roots across Nebraska in the 35-foot motor home in which he had planned to drive around the country with his late wife. His ultimate destination is Denver, where he hopes to bridge the gulf between himself and his somewhat estranged daughter by arriving early to help with her wedding preparations. Unfortunately, he hates the groom-to-be Randall, a profoundly mediocre, mediocre, underachieving waterbed salesman. To make matters worse, Warren is appalled by the free-spirited nature and boorish behavior of his soon-to-be in-laws (Kathy Bates and Howard Hesseman). Warren grows swiftly convinced that his new purpose in life is to stop his daughter's marriage................ This was a brilliant with a fantastic performance from jack Nicholson, Highly recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0257360/Repo Man 7/10Frustrated punk rocker Otto quits his supermarket job after slugging a co-worker, and is later dumped by his girlfriend at a party. Wandering the streets in frustration, he is recruited in the repossession of a car by a repo agent. After discovering his parents have donated his college fund to a televangelist, he joins the repossession agency as an apprentice "repo man". During his training, he is introduced into the mercenary and paranoid world of the drivers, befriended by a UFO conspiracy theorist, confronted by rival repo agents, discovers some of his one-time friends have turned to a life of crime, is lectured to about cosmic unconsciousness by the repo agency grounds worker, and finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue concerning a huge repossession bounty on a 1964 Chevy Malabu driven by a lunatic government scientist, with Top Secret cargo in the trunk............. This was a good film, well worth watching http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087995/

Charade 8/10Regina is about to divorce her husband when she finds that he has been murdered after converting every penny they owned to cash, which is also missing. She meets Peter Joshua who changes his name every 15 min. or so and is interested in her husband's money, which seems to have come from a WWII payroll he stole. His partners in crime are also very interested in where the money is, as he stole it from them as well. Everyone assumes Regina MUST know where the money is. The situation becomes more tense when the searchers begin turning up dead.......... this was a very good film with excellent performances from Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, Well recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0056923/Brighton Rock 8/10Pinkie Brown is a small town hoodlum who's gang run a protection racket based at Brighton race course. When Pinkie orders the murder of a rival, Fred, the police believe it to be suicide. This doesn't convince Ida Arnold, who was with Fred just before he died, and she sets out to find the truth. She comes across naive waitress Rose, who can prove that Fred was murdered. In an attempt to keep Rose quiet Pinkie marries her. But with his gang beginning to doubt his ability, and his rivals taking over his business, Pinkie starts to become more desperate and violent.............. Rude Boy (The Clash) Quite a decent film. Not quite sure whether it was all acted, if it was then some of the acting was pretty bad, but a brilliant insight into what it was like to tour with The Clash. I quite liked the part where Strummer is playing 'Let The Good Times Roll' on piano and the roadie who is the main character is drunkenly dancing.
Forca Barca! Campions 05/06, Campions D'Europa!

Angelas Ashes 9/10ANGELA'S ASHES is the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt whose personal memoir became a worldwide phenomenon. When eldest son Frank's baby sister dies and father Malachy can find no work, the McCourt family is forced to leave America and return to their native Ireland, where conditions are even more destitute than in Brooklyn. Malachy's northern accent is frowned upon in Limerick, keeping him on welfare and the family living in poverty. Things turn even more sour when two more children die and Malachy leaves the family to go to work in England. He never returns. Frank struggles through the poverty and his new role as man of the house, but throughout the seeming hopelessness his dream of traveling to America keeps him determined and optimistic...................... I watched this for the 2nd time today, its a brilliant and very underrated film, Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle give excellent performances as does the 3 actors who play Frank McCourt, Highly recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0145653/The Awful Truth 9/10In one of the supreme screwball comedies, young husband and wife Jerry and Lucy, suspicious that the other is having an affair, start divorce proceedings and see each other only when Jerry visits their dog, who is held in joint custody. As Lucy shows signs of falling for her oil-tycoon neighbor, Jerry goes to outrageous lengths to break them up. And Jerry’s own whirlwind courtship of a social darling hits snags as Lucy pretends to be his inebriated showgirl sister during Jerry’s meeting with his girlfriend’s parents. Stuck in an isolated cabin the eve their divorce becomes final, Lucy and Jerry discover the awful truth that they still love each other............... This was an excellent and funny film with good performances from Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, Well recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0028597/Open Hearts 8/10the fates of two couples are forever altered in the blink of an eye. Joachim and Cecilie are a young couple on the verge of marriage. But before they can make it official, a car hits Joachim, leaving him paralyzed. It turns out the driver of the car, Marie, is the wife of Niels, a doctor at the local hospital. Niels offers Cecilie a shoulder to cry on, and when a tormented Joachim sends her away, she takes Niels up on his offer. What begins as a harmless connection between two strangers quickly turns into something else, as Niels finds himself falling in love with Cecilie. Gradually, Marie begins to sense something is amiss, until the truth finally comes out, destroying their relationship in the process. A sudden change of heart from Joachim forces Cecilie to decide which man she wants to spend her life with.............. Mermaids 9/10Charlotte is an adolescent girl torn between her blossoming passions for a handsome caretaker...and her desire to be a nun (a tough calling for a girl who's Jewish). Complicating her already precarious teen angst is a little sister, a determined would-be swimmer she affectionately calls 'fishhead', and their mother, a non-traditional, sexy, flamboyant woman who relocates them to a new town every time she causes a hint of scandal - which is often. But even as their personal styles clash, these three incredibly different individuals begin to see that nothing - not even a life-threatening tragedy - can tear apart the bonds of family............... This was an excellent film with very good performances from Winona Ryder and Cher, Highly recommeded http://imdb.com/title/tt0100140/Welcome To The Dollhouse 8/10Dawn is bright but awkward, both physically and socially, and is appallingly unpopular among her peers, to whom she's better known as "Weiner Dog." Possessing little charm or grace and perhaps the most misguided fashion sense of her generation, Dawn is not an easy girl to like and practically no one seems interested in making the effort. If life is tough for Dawn at school, it's hardly any better at home. While her folks dote on her gratingly cute younger sister Missy and look with pride to her bookish older brother Mark, Dawn is either ignored or treated as an annoyance. Dawn has developed a crush on Steve, the guitarist Mark has drafted into his rock band Steve is polite but obviously not interested in her. However, Dawn has attracted the attention of a boy at school -- Brandon, a mean-spirited junior thug whose idea of a good time is threatening Dawn with rape.............. This was a very good film, well recommended http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114906/

Rasing Helen 6/10 Decent film starring the most gorgeous girl in the whole world, Kate Hudson! I watched purely because she's in it. The best scene is in the restaurant with the waiter, that's about it. She puts in an ok performance but there was no chemistry whatsoever between the two main leads. The Killer Elite 7/10 Good stuff starring Robert Duvall and James Caan. I'm not overly keen on Caan as I think he overacts, but Duvall is immense, once again. The General 10/10 Masterpeice! Naked 9/10Mike Leigh's NAKED is a violent, penetrating study of an angry young man who lives a dark night of the soul wandering through London's depths, preaching humanity’s inevitably approaching demise. After a sexual confrontation--possibly a rape--Johnny flees his native Manchester for London, where he hopes to find shelter with his ex-girlfriend Louise. Full of fury and blessed with a caustic wit, he rails futilely at all the societal mechanisms that oppress him, but vents his rage at women in particular. He immediately attacks Louise's bourgeois career aspirations, and pits her against her vulnerable, drugged-out roommate, Sophie, in a competition for his affections. When Johnny begins to chafe under Sophie's desperate neediness, he disappears aimlessly into the city, where he meets a variety of social outcasts, including an alcoholic waitress and a lonely security guard. Disgusted with the ever-present savagery of post-modern Britain, Johnny eventually returns to Louise after he is viciously beaten up. There, he encounters Jeremy, a mirror image of himself in the guise of a modern materialist, who has abused Louise and Sophie in even more humiliating ways............... This film is a little disturbing in places but its brilliant and yet another Mike Leigh and the acting is excellent from all the cast, Highly recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0107653/The Man On The Train (L Homme Du Train) 7/10When the criminal Milan rolls into town planning to knock off the local bank on Saturday, he assumes it will go off without a hitch. Then he encounters Manesquier. A retired poetry teacher whose sedentary lifestyle bores even himself, Manesquier offers Milan a much-needed drink of water in his musty old chateau. The only thing they seem to share is that Manesquier, too, has an important date on Saturday; but his is for open-heart surgery. From the start, the two men are equally wary of the other. Manesquier senses that Milan is up to no good, while Milan is driven crazy by Manesquier's incessant talking. But, when Milan is forced to hole up in Manesquier's mansion until the robbery, the distance between them begins to disappear. Suddenly, Manesquier wonders what it would be like to trade his books and art for Milan's gun and life of adventure. Meanwhile, Milan covets Manesquier's bedroom slippers and cozy life of stability. As their friendship develops, surprising moments of humor and tenderness emerge, as each seemingly defies his personality to explore his yearning for the life of the other. Saturday arrives. Milan and Manesquier have no choice but to part ways and head towards their different destinies. But even their destinies are no longer the same, for their very dreams have become intertwined.............. This was a good film but i think i might have liked it a bit more if it wasnt so hard to read the subtitles in places. Well worth watching http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301414/

Envy 5/10Poor film starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black. Black plays a guy who invents the "vapoorizer" which is a remarkable device which enables animal owners to make their "poo" dissapper and offers Stiller the chance to go 50/50, Stiller refuses and Black becomes immensely wealthy. Stiller becomes very "envious" of his best freinds new found wealth and sets out on a path of destruction. Christopher Walken is amazing as J-man and is the highlight of the film. The jokes weren't that funny and most of the script was similar to a childs vocabulary. I rate Stiller very highly but this is his worst performance in my opinion. Perhaps I watched it when I was in a bad mood or something... "On every street in every city, there
