Match Point - I'm not a fan of Woody Allen at the best of times so perhaps I cannot be totally objective but I really disliked this film. The plot was sound enough but the dialogue was awful. Allen clearly doesn't have a good grasp on how English people speak. Scarlett Johansson was as wooden as usual.
King Kong (2005) - Could do with a good 30 - 45 mins being cut off. I appreciate what Peter Jackson was trying to do but it didn't work for me. Too many characters and too many superfluous scenes. I imagine it would have been better had I seen it at the pictures.
The Rookie - Never give up on your dreams is the message of this film but it isn't laid on too thick and the film is feelgood without descending into saccharine nonsense.
In My Father's Den - A war photographer returns home for his father's funeral and befriends a young girl he finds in his old haunt. A suspenseful, fulfilling drama with uniformly excellent performances. A wee gem.
Kate & Leopold - Hugh Jackman plays an aristocrat acidentally transported into modern day New York where, horror upon horrors, he has to deal with Meg Ryan's shrieking cow of a character. Jackman makes the whole thing worthwhile by being utterly charming in the lead role.
Assault On Precinct 13 (2005) I thought it would be a bunch of balls but it was surprisingly enjoyable. It isn't as dark as the original but I don't think this was meant to be a note for note remake. It's only spoiled by the totally unbelievable ending.
Stalingrad - Unfortunately I only got to see the appallingly dubbed version and that clouded my judgement and enjoyment of this film.
I couldn't help but feel genuine sympathy for the situation all these men found themselves in. I appreciated the ending even if I didn't like it.
Mr Deeds - I've never seen Mr Deeds Goes To Town but I imagine that this bears little resemblance. Possibly one of the most predictable films ever made. Follows the Sandler formula to the letter.
As Tears Go By - A minor Triad flunky keeps having to bail out his best mate and gets into trouble. He tries to leave the criminal life behind when he falls in love with his cousin.
The story reminds me a bit of Mean Streets. It's very rough around the edges and I couldn't really get into it. Andy Lau was in it though so there were some compensations.
The Proposition - One of my films of the year. A fly-blown, hot, sweaty, bloody & brutal depiction of the 'civilizing' of Australia. I felt grimy after watching it. The superb performances of Ray Winstone and Emily Watson plus the stunning cinematography makes this unmissable.
