Alexander - Oh Oliver, what happened to you ? *shakes head*. I cringed my way through this. WTF was up with Angelina Jolie - surely a contender for worst accent in a film. Pure comedy.
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy - Rather enjoyable flick. Highlights include Sam Rockwell as Zaphod, the improbability drive and the animated entries from the guide. Negative points are Mos Def and the fact that it felt a bit rushed. Totally Rockwell's film.
Bring It On - Was persuaded to watch this by my sister. Inoffensive teen fluff. Not really my thing.
Lucky Number Slevin - A case of mistaken identities etc etc. A bit amusing to start with but then it got irritating. Lucy Liu's character was dumb. The whole film left me feeling deeply unsatisfied.
The Hills Have Eyes - I haven't seen the original so have nothing to compare this to but I thought it was pretty good for what it was.
Some pretty shocking and unexpected bits that didn't conform to the horror norm. Also a little more character development than you usually get. If you don't like extreme film violence then you should avoid this.
Cache (Hidden) - A married couple are terrorized by a series of videotapes planted by their front door.
A film that I didn't really enjoy but challenged me and gave me a lot to think about. I don't think you could warm to the lead characters and perhaps you aren't even meant to.
It does contain a scene that genuinely shocked me and made gasp. Depite the tension of the film it came totally out of the blue.
This will never be my favourite Hanecke film but I can grudgingly appreciate it.
Capote - The story of the writing of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. One of my favourite films of this year. This film really rests on the shoulders of Hoffman's Capote and he totally succeeds. His Oscar was well deserved. That isn't to say the rest of the cast don't do their bit, they are all brilliant especially Clifton Collins Jnr as Perry Smith.
A compelling and beautifully shot film.
Junebug - An art dealer travels to North Carolina to meet her new smalltown in-laws.
I found this film pretty dull save for the performance of Amy Adams as the very upbeat Ashley. The film feels very realistic in that not all conflicts are neatly solved at the end of 90 mins but I was still bored.
Jackass: The Movie - There isn't any plot or characters and it's really just an extended episode of the series. That doesn't stop it from being very funny. I laughed like a drain. It is a bit hit and miss but when they hit it is ace. A guilty pleasure.
13: Tzameti - A young man follows instructions meant for somebody else and has no idea where they will take him.
Excellent low budget, black and white thriller.
It all starts off quite ordinary but then descends into a nightmare for the main character. It's very spare and there isn't much dialogue. It is almost unbearably tense in the later scenes. Recommended.
