I was looking for a word to describe Hostel and it came to me... listless!

Cruel torture without moral responsibilities. Sure that's the point but think I'll stick to the filmmakers prepared to anchor themselves to a coherent aesthetic.

The Firm (The 1988 Alan Clarke film, not the Tom Cruise thing) - I'd forgotten how great this film was. Brilliant.

A never-before-attempted triple bill yesterday:

The Killer - 9/10

A Better Tomorrow - 8/10

Hard Boiled - 8/10

I am now quite desperate to have Chow Yun-Fat's babies, and I am actively investigating how I might be able to do this. So, watch this space!

Fight Club - I've never enjoyed it as much as today. Brilliant

The Mothmans Prophecies - This is an excellent film. Very intense. I just wish Mark Pellington would make more films. Fantastic

Red Road
Bleak, disturbing and a very real account of one woman's obsession with a man she recognises from CCTV footage. I'm not going to give the storyline away but it is well worth a watch.

The Host
While it's no Tremors or Slither it is still a good bit of fun. The one pity about it is that it is only a 15 cert.

The Prestige
Well acted, beautifully filmed, this is a very smart film. Christopher Nolan once again proving his filmmaking ability. The one questionable thing about it is the ending. Personally I didn't mind it but I can understand how people might be put off by it.

Starter for 10
A really nice feel good film, totally enjoyed this and it has a cracking soundtrack. Never mind the posters claims of 'hilarious' & 'best comedy in years', it's not, but it does have one thing alot of its competition lacks, a human touch.

Sixty Six
Having absolutely no interest in football I went to this not expecting much but the World Cup plays a secondary role as this is the story of Bernie, the young boy whos barmitzvah just so happens to fall on the same day as the final in 1966.
Enjoyable, but does get a bit too sentimental in the last act.

12 and Holding
A story about 3 twelve year olds and how they cope with the death of their friend. A brilliant, powerful film with fine acting performances from the kids. A fine ensemble of adult actors too including Annabella Sciorra & Jeremy Renner.

The Tiger's Tail
This embarrassingly bad effort from John Boorman is quite simply awful. In short it about a successful property developer in Dublin (Brendan Gleeson) who's life is turned around when he sees his 'double'.
I still can't quite decide which was worse, the acting, the directing or Kim Catrell's Irish accent.

Waiting - Nothing special but funny it places. Unpainful. 5/10

The Prestige - This bored me, I was really disappointed. Great acting though the use of David Bowie seemed slightly bizarre. They could have picked the twists straight from an old ep of Tales of The Unexpected quite honestly. It came off as a weird hybrid to me and we never saw the depth to the characters beginnings to explain their later actions. A joy to see Michael Caine and Christian Bale working together though. 6/10

Amélie - I'd forgotten just how charming this film truly is. 10/10

All the King's Men 9/10

Sean Penn's performance... immense! Excellent film, even though it's a remake. I don't mind a remake if the people involved know what they're doing, even though I disagree with the principle of remaking a film in the first place.

The Matador - Absolutely brilliant. Words cannot describe how excellent this film is. Certainly one of the best films i've seen this year.; I recommend it to anyone.

Maximum Rick - Yes old film but it's Van Dam doing what he does best. An average film i guess.
