The Boxer 9/10Danny Flynn, a repentant IRA operative seasoned by a 14-year prison term, returns to the neighborhood of his childhood to try to rebuild his life. A prizefighter in his youth, he teams up with his old trainer to reopen a nonsectarian boxing gym in a bombed-out community center. Meanwhile, Danny finds himself undeniably drawn to his old girlfriend Maggie, who is now married to his former best friend, an imprisoned IRA member. Maggie's father, Joe Hamil, the head of the local IRA chapter, is attempting to negotiate an IRA cease-fire, causing extreme tension between IRA factions with opposing views. Danny and Maggie's rekindled love, which defies the IRA rule promising death for anyone having an affair with an imprisoned operative's wife, thrusts Danny straight into the center of the erupting tensions.............. This was an excellent film with excellent performances from Daniel Day Lewis and Emily Watson, well recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0118760/Gosford Park 8/10In November 1932, a phalanx of moneyed guests arrives for a weekend shooting party at the estate of Sir William McCordle and Lady Sylvia. Mary, a fresh-faced, naïve new maid accompanies the sniping Countess of Trentham, and is shown the ropes by the house's worldly head housemaid, Elsie. While the masters engage in various financial and sexual intrigues upstairs, the world downstairs has its own curiosities--namely, the predatory valet to a Hollywood producer, Henry Denton, and the mysterious, cagey servant, Robert Parks . Mary soon discovers that the image of servants living vicariously through their masters is a false one, and that the upstairs-downstairs worlds are often shockingly interwoven........... This was a very good film, well recommended http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280707/

That was a great line in the film, and so bloody true! Also, just wondering how many people we have in here from the US (or other non-UK places!) I keep coming across titles and DVD versions that aren't available over here in the UK, so I figure there must be a few Americans kicking about here. Either that or a few Brits with a, shall we say, good broadband connection?!
Actually brother it more like Brits with...er...excellent broadband connection. Use your imagination for that......since US films are generally crap...well the new ones at least.
Or an Amazon account and a multi-region player... ......_____,__  __  _\______ - ---o ~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~♥~ 0 -----` --(@)==========(@)--

Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? 10/10Based on the controversial play by Edward Albee, this noir-ish 1966 drama stars former real-life couple Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, in what many critics consider to be their best performances. George (Burton) is a senior professor of history who has turned to alcohol to deal with his vituperative, vicious wife Martha (Taylor), whose appetite for administering abuse knows no bounds. Invited to the couple's home for late-night drinks are new professor Nick (George Segal), and his naïve wife Honey (Sandy Dennis), where over the course of the evening, the polished veneer of the hosts tarnishes grotesquely. The witty repartee of consummate sophisticate Martha degenerates into increasingly violent verbal abuse of both her husband and guests, while George's stoic façade crumbles both physically and emotionally. The horrified Nick and Honey initially come off as happier foils to the misery of the older married couple, but the guests are soon mirroring George and Martha in their mutual antagonism, giving voice to buried resentments and alcohol-fueled revelations of repressed injuries............... I watched this film for the first time today and it was superb, Both Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor give fantastic performances and George Segal and Sandy Dennis both provide excellent supporting performances, I highly recommend this film to anyone http://imdb.com/title/tt0061184/Roman Holiday 8/10Princess Anne, weary of protocol and anxious to have some fun before she is mummified by "affairs of state." On a diplomatic visit to Rome, Anne escapes her royal retainers and scampers incognito through the Eternal City. She happens to meet American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck), who, recognizing a hot news story, pretends that he doesn't recognize her and offers to give her a guided tour of Rome. Naturally, Joe hopes to get an exclusive interview, while his photographer pal Irving (Eddie Albert) attempts to sneak a photo. And just as naturally, Joe falls in love with her.............. This was a very good film with excellent performances from Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, well recommended http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046250/

The Basketball Diaries 9/10Film adaptation of street tough Jim Carroll's epistle about his kaleidoscopic free fall into the harrowing world of drug addiction. As a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, Jim's life centers around the basketball court and the court becomes a metaphor for the world in his mind. A best friend who is dying of leukemia, a coach ("Swifty") who takes unacceptable liberties with the boys on his team, teenage sexual angst, and an unhealthy appetite for heroin -- all of these begin to encroach on young Jim's dream of becoming a basketball star. Soon, the dark streets of New York become a refuge from his mother's mounting concern for her son. He can't go home and his only escape from the reality of the streets is heroin for which he steals, robs and prostitutes himself. Only with the help of Reggie, an older neighborhood friend with whom Jim played basketball with now and then, is he able to begin the long journey back to sanity................ This was an excellent film, Leonardo DiCaprio gave an excellent performance, well recommended http://imdb.com/title/tt0112461/

Lost And Delirious 9/10Three schoolgirls learn about the joys, sorrows, and varieties of love in this drama based on the novel The Wives of Bath by Susan Swan. Mary is a quiet girl who is still recovering from the death of her mother. Mary's father and new stepmother, who are blind to her emotional needs, send her away to an all-girls college, where Mary becomes fast friends with her new roommates, sophisticated Paulie and worldly Tory. But Mary soon discovers that Paulie and Tory are more than just friends, and have begun to pursue a passionate physical relationship. While initially puzzled by their lesbian leanings, Mary remains close friends with both of them; Tory's sister is not so open minded, however, and threatens to tell their parents about Tory's affair. Afraid and confused, Tory quickly breaks off her romance with Paulie and takes up with Jake, a student at a nearby boys' school. Paulie is heartbroken, and desperately struggles to win Tory back by writing her epic-length poems on the subject of love and loss. Paulie also finds a metaphor for her wounded heart as she finds an injured bird in the woods and struggles to restore it to health; in addition, she discovers an understanding soul in the person of Fay Vaughn, one of her teachers. Lost and Delirious was the first English-language feature for Québecois filmmaker Lea Pool; the film received its world premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival................ This was a surprisingly excellent film with excellent performances, well recommeded http://imdb.com/title/tt0245238/A Cry In The Dark 8/10Meryl Streep and Sam Neill star in this documentary style film adaptation of the true story of Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, an Australian couple who lived the nightmare of losing their infant daughter during a family camping trip. When Lindy spies a dingo nearby, authorities launch a frantic search, but all they find is a torn, bloodied garment. The press, distressed by the mother's seeming "lack of emotion," and suspicious of her strict Seventh Day Adventist religious beliefs, begin to accuse her of murdering the baby. The sentiment against her begins to grow, and soon the whole continent is talking about the case in a malicious witch hunt. Despite the lack of evidence, Lindy Chamberlain is imprisoned; although investigators eventually reexamine her story, the damage is done: the innocent mother's relationship with her husband has been irreparably destroyed and she has spent over three years in prison for a crime she did not commit. This painful portrayal of the power of public opinion and political and emotional persecution is captured with steely intensity by Streep, she is captivating as the much-maligned victim of social injustice who is bolstered by her strong religious faith and stoic demeanor.............. This was a very good film with an excellent performance from Meryl Streep, well recommended http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094924/

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - saw it last night, was amazing, I want to see it again!
The Disappearing Hobbit! ----------------- Now, listen carefully. Lord Denethor is Boromir's father. To give him news of his beloved son's death would be most unwise. And do not mention Frodo, or the Ring. And say nothing of Aragorn either. In fact, it's better if you don't speak at all, Peregrin Took. Do you hear the people sing, Singing the song of angry men, it is the music of the people who will not be slaves again, when the beating of your hearts, echos the beating of the drums, there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes! There goes the cavalry... but who will rescue the rescuers? Having dallied with the mortals, the gods return to Mount Olympus. And So I follow! ----------------- Sorry I havn't been online much, blame Willow!
