The Polar Express

It was a bit too American for me although I thought although the hobo ontop of the train suggested something darker underneath all the sugar coating. The story came from a book by the
same guy who wrote Jumanji(Chris Van Allsburg)
and I was expecting more in the way of original ideas but story wise there wasn't much that was original about this movie. However it was visually impressive with realistic looking computer animated humans like Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within and lots of
detail probably inspired by the illustrations in Allsburgs book however it left me feeling that with such advanced computer animation they could have done so much more.

Bad Santa - I really liked this, the kid in it is so cute.

Silver City - It was ok, not exactly gripping though. The cast was pretty good.

My Life As A Dog 9/10
In 1959 Sweden, young Ingemar lives with his dying mother and his older brother. He survives all of life's knocks by comparing himself to those who are worse off--such as Laika, the little Russian space dog who was rocketed to his death and had nothing to say in the matter. Ingemar begins to identify with Laika more and more as his mother's health deteriorates, at times dropping to all fours and baying at the moon. When his mother is advised to get some peace and quiet away from her children, Ingemar is sent to live with his uncle and aunt. For the first time, the boy is surrounded by relatives and classmates who pose no threat and who genuinely like him. When his mother dies, he no longer rationalizes his misfortunes by comparing himself to those less fortunate; from now on, he can conjure up pleasant memories of his summer away from home to sustain him through the hard times................ This was an excellent film, well recommended

Europa Europa 9/10
Agnieszka Holland's 'Europa Europa' is the fascinating fact-based story of Solomon Perel, a German Jew who survived the Holocaust by concealing his identity, literally within enemy ranks. When Nazi thugs smash into the Perels' house, 13-year-old Solly manages to flee. Upon his reunion with his family, they head for Poland, hoping to find safety but war soon overcomes that land, and once again Solly is forced to run, this time with his brother. They become separated, however, and ultimately Solly falls into the clutches of the Nazis. He quickly realizes he has just two chances for survival: convincing them that he, too, is a pure-blooded Aryan, and hoping that they never find out the truth................ This was a brilliant film, well recommended

Unleashed - It's strangely brilliant! Admittedly my expectations were at rock bottom going in, and it turned out to be, just, bizzarely entertaining. Come on, any film with Morgan Freeman and Jet Li grocery hunting in a Glaswegian Spar shop has to be seen to be believed!

Oops sorry Martl missed this post. No, not really been posting there recently..slashmusic seems to have changed the music forum quite a lot. Plus I ran out of questions for the Choose one game (or whatever it was called!) Wink

Notting Hill...cheese, but good cheese. I've seen this film countless times. It is a good film, Rhys Ifans' character makes me laugh every time I watch it. Cool

Body Heat 8/10
During one hot and sultry Florida summer, a shady lawyer launches into a torrid relationship with a lonely woman married to a rich businessman. As their relationship grows, she decides to enlist his help in killing her husband so that the two can live comfortably off his riches. After they've successfully completed the deed, the lovers' relationship sours, and they both become principal suspects in the police investigation............. This was a very good film, with good performances from Kathleen Turner and William Hurt, well recommended

The Deep End 8/10
Margaret Hall is a wife and mother of three living in Lake Tahoe, whose husband is a Naval officer stationed in the Atlantic ocean. Margaret's oldest son, teenaged Beau, is gay and has become involved with Darby, a disreputable older man whom Margaret does not trust. Margaret confronts Darby and tells him to stay away from her son, but Darby isn't easily dissuaded, and he comes by the house late one night, leading to a fight between Beau and Darby. The next morning, Margaret discovers Darby's body on the beach, with an anchor piercing his chest. Not sure what to do, Margaret hauls Darby's body out to sea, and dumps it where she hopes it will not be found. Margaret tries to get her life back to normal, until a man named Alek appears at her door. Alek appears to know something about Darby's death, and he definitely knows about Beau's relationship with him; in fact, he has a videotape of Beau and Darby having sex, and he's prepared to make it public unless she'll pay him $50,000. Margaret is in no position to pay the money, but is desperate to protect her son and attempts to reason with Alek. Surprisingly enough, in time it works, and Alek withdraws his request for blackmail money. However, Nagle, a local crime boss whom Alek works for, is not nearly so generous............ This was a very good film, well recommended

Stander - Based on a true story of a South African cop who becomes disillusioned and starts robbing banks. Great story, fine performances all round (particularly Thomas Jane). You should try to watch it if you like your action films laced with comedy, and spined with a message.

The Monster Squad - The first time I've seen this since the 80s, brought back some great memories. Brilliant kids film, with some genuine scariness.

Phantasm 3 - A film that I like place in the category of 'quality crud', meaning you enjoy watching it but you know it doesn't stand up to much scutiny Smile

Welcome To Sarajevo 9/10
Michael Winterbottom's drama, adapted by journalist Michael Nicholson from his memoir NATASHA’S STORY, concerns the horrific bloodshed that broke out in Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. Most specifically, the film focuses its attention on Bosnia, the capital of Sarajevo, when the violence was its most intense and unpredictable. The story follows a group of journalists who spend their days braving the front lines, searching for footage that will guarantee them a prime slot on their local newscast. Michael Henderson, is a disillusioned English war reporter working alongside cameraman Gregg and producer Jane. The trio immediately befriends their new driver, Risto, while contending with Flynn, a hotshot American who is more interested in individual glory than the war itself. When Nina, a relief worker, arrives to shuttle a busload of children out of the country, Henderson takes it upon himself to smuggle out Emira, an apparent orphan, risking his life in the process.............. This was an excellent film, well recommended

Alice Doesnt Live here Anymore 8/10
After stunning audiences with his ferociously personal, gritty depictions of masculinity in WHO'S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR? (1968) and MEAN STREETS (1973), Martin Scorsese bade farewell to his native New York City in order to direct this delightfully bittersweet portrait of an unflappable single mother. Alice Hyatt, a newly widowed woman who hopes to fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a singer. Fleeing her small New Mexico town with her 11-year-old son, Tommy, Alice promises not to stop until they reach her hometown of Monterey, California. But after a near disaster in Phoenix, the pair settles in Tucson, where Alice grudgingly takes a job as a waitress. It's there where she meets the irresistible David, a warmhearted customer who won't take no for an answer. At the same time, Tommy befriends Audrey, a young tomboy with a mischievous streak................ This was a very good film with a excellent performance from Ellen Burstyn, well recommended
