Question:
Who would you say was the greatest director of the 20th century?

There are a few contenders but for me it's Alfred Hitchcock. I mean just by sheer virtue of the amount of great or very good films he made. I've listed just his American studio stuff but he was doing great things with British cinema before that. I mean look at the films he made in just a six year period between 1953 and 1959. Anyway hopefully this thread can be about why you're 'for' a director than agin one.

Marnie (1964)
The Birds (1963)
Psycho (1960)
North by Northwest (1959)
Vertigo (1958)
The Wrong Man (1956)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)
The Trouble with Harry (1955)
17 episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955) TV Series
To Catch a Thief (1955)
Rear Window (1954)
Dial M for Murder (1954)
I Confess (1953)
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Rope (1948)
The Paradine Case (1947)
Notorious (1946)
Spellbound (1945)
Lifeboat (1944)
Shadow of a Doubt (1943)
Saboteur (1942)
Suspicion (1941)
Foreign Correspondent (1940)
Rebecca (1940)

Choices:
Alfred Hitchcock
Steven Spielberg
Akira Kurasawa
Martin Scorsese
Other

I'd like to say Yimou Zhang for the brilliant 'House of flying daggers' and 'Hero'.

Alfred Hitchcock is a classic and probably the best for most people but his movie are too old and I don't particularly like watching them albeit for a few, 'Birds' and 'Psycho'.

I would say Peter Jackson is the best fantasy director. 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy and 'King Kong' are as great as any Hitchcock classic!

Overall I'd say Spielberg simply for 'E.T.', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'Schindlers List' and 'Jurassic Park'.

Almost forgot these:

Quentin Taratino. Unmistakable style, he brought it home with the Kill Bill's and his earlier films are cult classics.

Other directors:

Ridley Scott
Tim Burton
Sam Raimi
Stanley Kubrick
Michael Mann

WORST director award goes to - Paul W. S. Anderson (anyone in agreement here?) He sucks!

No, there is someone worst than Paul W.S Anderson....he goes by the name of Uwe Boll. He was allowed to practice film due to a loop hole in German law that allow a sizable tax rebait on failed businesses [or something like that]. I understand its no longer the case which means this mutant can't make any films. Trust me when i say, this guy is worst than Paul Anderson. At least there is a little enjoyment in Anderson film, even if they are crap and cheese. Boll on the other hand, his films are....crap...and an insult to the filmmaking proffession.

'Lord of the Rings' trilogy and 'King Kong' are as great as any Hitchcock classic![/quote]

No, they're not, they just have better SFX by virtue of the technology they have now compared to then. I wish you people could see past the very childish need for special effects and see the real qualities of a film. script, performance and direction. These are the important elements and the only ones that will continue to exist after CGI has been replaced by some newer sfx method and has become as outmoded as 'Stop Motion'. In five years King Kong will seem passe. But the films of masters like Hitchcock, Scorsese, Kurasawa, Huston, Ford and Kubrick will remain brilliant no matter how much technology evolves, their work will stand forever to everyone who appreciates film for more than the special effects on show.

YES they ARE! I don't really care what your opinion is, Lord of the Rings is an epic fantasy masterpiece and will forever stand out in history as a pinnacle of the movie industry. It won 11 goddamn oscars for crying out loud. Did Hitchcock win an oscar? I'm not saying he isn't a good director, because technically he was probably the best there was, but his movies just don't appeal to me. They seem tedious, but by technical merits are a masterpiece.

And who said anything about special effects? I don't remember saying the special effects made the movie. King Kong has heart and soul to it's story not just CGI and a very fantastic performance by Naomi Watts. So there's your great script, performance and direction. King Kong himself is a technical achievment by use of motion capture, Andy Serkis who plays Kong spent actual time with gorillas to prepare for the role. It's not just the CGI it's the attention to detail that makes King Kong such a success. I think it's unfair that people should bring a movie down because it enhances the visual effect through CGI rather than sticking to less effective old fashioned methods. Movies are meant to entertain, and boy does King Kong do it's job.

Only time will tell whether in fifty years people are still pondering and arguing about Peter Jackson's work like they are Hitchcock's, oh and Martin Scorsese hasn't won an Oscar either. You saying he's not as good as the directors who have? like err Kevin Costner?

sorry 'talk to me' but I don't want to talk to you. You are far too dim to have a conversation with. I don't know if you've gotten your computer from like some care in the community scheme but turn it off and go to bed
