It seemed a bit shallow and cliched removed from John Irving's book (I Know Irving wrote the screenplay); not unentertaining, but watching Lasse Hallstrom's 'My Life as a Dog' recently, it seems a bit shallow compared...

It's great, it's a classic and I can't fault it. It has a great story, superb acting and great direction. What more can I add? Nothing.

10/10!

i've only seen bits of the film - but the book, and john irving, is one of my favourites. the bits i saw looked ok, but does a film ever match up to a book? there's not many...

It probably has to do with how you as a reader engage/imagine when reading the book - much more potent than most cinema! Irving's books tend to become precious too, and all being 300-500 (average) pages long, last sometime and drag you in. Reading the book you don't get the idea it's fairly stock melodrama; the film, which was OK but nothing to get excited about, this became apparent...
