or rather a story to support the argument of the people on here who say age is just a number. A man of 90+ has his first accident in 70+ years - I would say that is an excellent driving record and one to be proud of. The reason it has hit the headlines is cos of his age. It if had been a person of 20, 20, 40, 50 60 or whatever it wouldnt have got a mention. People are involved RTA's every day but not many people live till they are 90, let alone still have all their faculties. Well done that man I say.

I was under the impression that all drivers over 70 have to provide medical documentation from a Doctor saying that they are still compus mentis enough to drive, are not suffering from any ailments that would prevent them from driving, and that their eyesight is still good enough for driving. My father, in his middle/late 70s was by far a safer driver than the young drivers of today. A neighbour of mine had a fit when he was in his late 50s, and was told by his Doctor he could never drive again. As he coudl no longer drive, he lost his job and was given invalidity benifit. His son, on the other hand is lethal, and there`s more rubber from his tyres on the road outside his garden, than there is on his tyres themselves. He flies round the bend, screeches to a halt and then reverses at 60mph onto his driveway.

just beacuse an old driver has had a great driving record before he/she got old that doesn't mean he/she should be allowed to drive while he/she is old

driving licences do expire at 70 yrs of age and have to be re-applied for every 3 yrs thereafter tho Im not sure whether a dr has to sign something to say the driver is fit to drive or the emphasis is on the driver to declare anything that would make him/her unfit to drive (bit like other age groups). There are some real lunatics on the roads in every age group, its true, and its impossible to generalise but Just cos somebody has reached X years of age doesnt make them a bad driver, as has been said in this thread. Seeing as Im in the middle of 17 - 70 age range I can see it from both sides but I really loathe sweeping generalisations that lump everybody together.

I dont think there will ever be a solution...this is the kind of debate which could carry on for years...*thinks: what will I be like at driving when I am 70?!*

and by then some of the oposers of older age drivers will be older themselves. Wonder if they will stil be of the same opinion when they reach the ripe ol age of X

In all fairness, i'm not sure the 'debate' was on the capabilities or lack there of, of an older person, it was the fact they have so much aid for them, that due to the ever growing population, roads are becoming congested. They are upping the age you can legally start learning to drive to 18, so it's not all bad on the older drivers side. It's all swings and roundabouts. Nobody can stop a persons opinion, just like the next person may have an opposing opinion. Subjective arguments will never come to an agreement.

Sweeping generalisations that lump everyone into seperate boxes according to their age is really silly, as far as I can see. Insurance companies know EXACTLY who cause the most accidents. This why every male under 25 pays so much more than the rest of the population. But, it doesn`t mean that ALL males under 25 are "boy racers", but there are enough of them to cost insurers a lot of money. Insurance Rates on the older drivers being discussed here are no higher than the general population. So the insurance companies aren`t worried. So why should anyone else?

I have just found out that my neighbour who drives a big posh merc is 94! he gives me lifts quite often and is one of the safest drivers I know! I knew he was retired and thought he was about 70 until his wife told me...well I never!

WOW he must be wearing well eh. my dad who is 86 still has his car/dr licence and of course he has his bus pass too but guess what, he prefers to walk everywhere if possible. He walks for miles every day unless the weather is attrocious/slippery under foot then thankfully he is sensible and stays at home. He has said that if/when my daughter passes her dr test he will give her his car cos he only ever wanted the car/dr licence to take my mam out who had mobility probs and now she has gone he really isnt bothered about it. I think its great your neighbour is still going strong at 94. Good for him.

Different insurance co's offer different rates for different groups of driver. My husband's ins co wouldnt let him have my teenage son on his ins so he switched to a co which did. My dad, on the other hand, found that his ins co put the premium up once he got past a certain age so he switched co's too. My son who is now almost 25 cant wait to pass this magical milestone cos it means he will be able to get a better deal insurance-wise. WHen he first passed his test, at the age of 19 he was stopped routinely on average every 6 wks for the first year by the police. He was breathalized but never ever failed and his car or him were never ever found lacking/illegal. Obviously the police are on the look out for young lads who are the biggest dr law breakers. He was a bit naffed off at the time but it didnt doo him any harm.
